One not made with laburnum - pretty much any of them, actually, since there wasn't a single piece of laburnum in any of the pieces that John Bly identifies so proudly as such.

@@dlevi67What makes you think you know better than John Bly?
@dlevi67Ай бұрын
@@paulfitzgerald7513 Literature and research published in the intervening 15-35 years from when these snippets were filmed. For example, see Adam Bowett's "Woods in British Furniture-making, 1400-1900" and a number of articles published by the Furniture History Society, where pieces very similar to the ones Bly is discussing have been examined by botanists and found to be variously olive wood, cocus wood, carob tree wood, various species of Dalbergia, but no laburnum veneer has been found in a piece of British furniture (except possibly for a few 'sampling' cabinets or tables). Laburnum has been used - minus the yellow sap wood, which is soft and subject to woodworm attack - in the solid in some Scottish furniture. Incidentally - same thing (misidentification) has occurred with 'mulberry', which was a commonly accepted term in the antiques trade until the early 2000s for what is botanically maple treated with lamp-black and nitric acid.

The little fruitwood chest from the early 1700s with the drawer linings made from 'recycled' painted Tudor panels from 150 years earlier was stunning, especially the vibrant colours. What a beautiful little thing.

He is obviously doing what he loves. His description of pieces shows his knowledge and love of them. He seems so happy and excited when he can educate people on their piece. I love him ❤❤.

When the sad day comes that John Bly is no longer with us the world will lose so much knowledge. But more than that. Even if his sum knowledge was compiled into hundreds of volumes for posterity it could not be delivered with such grace, passion and eloquence. Listening to him talk about furniture is like listening to Mozart.

his knowledge seems fathomless and his enthusiasm so inspiring. "Brown" furniture has gone right out of fashion now so the valuations might be very different today.
