Well technically that is correct but it does not always work out that way. A lot of old companies still stick to the term "antivirus" even if they provide protection against adware, PUP's and zero day threats. To get the right protection it is important to understand how these solutions work instead of just the names. In this day and age you need to have a program that provides realtime "zero day" protection. This can be a behavior blocker or intrusion prevention system. Since a lot of malware is created everyday it is important to have a solution that can protect you against unknown malware. As with everything else the effectiveness of any product is not guaranteed so be sure to check sure to check out some reviews before choosing any product. Thanks for the video, Linus, Best regards from The PC Security Channel.

I really don't care about the interface, Malwarebytes' is still a great anti-malware. :p
As a fairly seasoned at home PC repair guy I find that freshly re installing your operating system is the best way to get rid of all the nasties in your PC, just make sure to back up your important files first and to have your Windows Activation key written down somewhere. To keep your PC running quick as a whip after the re installation try installing these programs: Avast Antivirus, Malwarebytes, Glary Utilities, and CCleaner, these are all free software unless of course you want the Pro editions. After you've installed those run a scan with Avast and then Malwarebytes on your backed up files to make sure they aren't infected and boom you should have a PC as functional as when you first bought it, well, assuming there's no major dust build up around your hardware anyway. I've used this method for about 2 years now and it has yet to leave me with an unsatisfied client.

This video is misleading, but perhaps not intentionally. Malware is any form of malicious software, a virus is a specific type of malware. An antivirus program IS an antimalware program. And while the term malware can technically apply to things other than viruses (I.E. potentially unwanted programs, adware and spyware.) malware and virus are widely used interchangeably. Also, you don't need two separate programs running on your system. You want to run a program that has real time scanning capability, and probably both web content filtering and firewall or intrusion defense as well. It's not a bad idea to have some sort of mail scanning feature either. Preferably you should use an antivirus program which does both signature based (heuristic) and behavioral based (anomaly) monitoring and detection. That means that the antivirus scanner not only looks at files known to be dangerous, but also looks at other programs running on your computer displaying typical malicious or abnormal behavior. You should always look up the detection and removal ratings of any antivirus program you buy, by researching tests run by independent eval companies, like AMTSO (Antimalware Testing Standards Organization.)
@JackSparrow-yl3yu9 жыл бұрын
+ethernetspit you sound knowledgeable, can you lease translate that into English?
@MCwhiteywhitewhite9 жыл бұрын
+Jack Sparrow Viruses are malware. The two terms are more often than not used interchangeably. "Malware" isn't some new form of viruses that requires you to buy a special product. Malware is just the umbrella term for viruses and other malicious software (program wrote to do malicious things, like hack your computer, steal your data or password, etc.) Does that make sense?

@vukpsodorov54468 жыл бұрын
+hellterminator some, actually, a lot of malware pages force you to download files as soon as you open them, and those files are usually small so that before you can get out and close the page, it already downloaded them. having a decent anti-virus prevents you from downloading pretty much any malware, as most of them are old and the anti-viruses know about them. you can very easily prevent yourself from entering malware-enforcing pages though, since you'll either see that you're being re-directed to somewhere completely different (and therefore you'll have time to close the page or the browser) or you'll see a big flaw in the name of the page (a real example would be goggle instead of google, and yes, i know that goggle is a real word but still) and then you'll know that it's probably not a good website to enter. also, many browsers have in-built protection (google chrome is a very good example) and it won't let you enter some easily recognisable harmful sites. another thing to note is that adblock can prevent any spyware or anything like that which could spy on you by opening in another window without you noticing, since it's working against pop-ups and whatever unwanted content which shouldn't be on the page, and it checks what's the source of the pop-up or ad and then proceeds to block it if it conflicts with it's big database. pretty much all spyware is under that category.
@hellterminator8 жыл бұрын
Mighty Wolf A web page serves me up a file for download, so what? If you have your browser configured to ask what to do with files being downloaded, a dialog will pop up and you will be able to cancel the download. If you have your browser configured to just automatically save everything to some folder, you _will_ be alerted when the download finishes. Then, all you have to do is not run that executable (and delete it, although you don't really have to if you want to keep it for some reason).
@vukpsodorov54468 жыл бұрын
***** most malicious programs which are downloaded actually don't need you to start them up. i'm talking about viruses such as self-replicating worms and whatnot.
@hellterminator8 жыл бұрын
Mighty Wolf Developing a proper worm is extremely difficult (and therefore very expensive), so no one bothers to do that when all you have to do is set up a “free movie streaming” site which requires you to install a “plugin” to play all those free movies. Besides, all worms are developed specifically to circumvent malware protection, so running an anti-malware program won't save you either. But there's not much to worry about, the era of really bad worms like Code Red or Sapphire is long gone.

I've been using no antivirus but two anti malware programs for almost 2 years now and I've only gotten infected once (trojans), infection which I erased overnight with no damages to my computer and no side effects. It's simple to keep your computer out of danger with the right utilities and the correct amount of knowledge about which programs should be running in your computer, which "behaviours" are uncommon (to check for suspicious programs in the task manager or service startup), and which measures you should be taking. Obviously it's not something anyone can do (I usually spend days on my computer since I was 12), but just putting here that it's totally doable to skip the "active" part of the anti-virus (Because I know there are people that are too scared to surf the internet without an antivirus installed, since I was like that) so you don't have to pay anything, so you don't have "false positives" popping out everyday, and to not have compatibility issues.

I have to say, this video came at the perfect time. I have a notice that my gaming PC has been running super slow lately, and I asked my dad, who works in the computer industry, what I should do to try to fix it besides antivirus scans and restarting the computer (I obviously did more than that, but that really does solve most people probs). He had suggested and time

Virus is basically a program that does actions the user doesn't want.
Mr.Kristian252 I would of did something worse than that.

I have been on the web since the early 90s and have used quite a few different malware protection programs since then. The best one I have ever used is Malwarebytes and I don't care about the graphics or any of that. I care about being protected and the engineering report I read had Malwarebytes at or near the top of the heap. I have heard good things about Kaspersky also but have never used it. Malwarebytes does it all and I DO NOT work for them!

My Kaspersky is second to none, anywhere. Its logging and file control is also second to none. I haven't seen anything come anywhere near as good with their cloud based connection, Being able to locate a device anywhere, send it a signal to alarm out is pure ice cream. Being able to brick and wipe a device remotely is one of the reasons I've been with them for a decade now.

Browser- Chrome or Firefox with AdBlock plus with the tracking and Malware filters, IE gets the nod when the built in protocol for adding filters starts working. NoScript if you want to be really anal. AV - AVG, Avast, AdAware, MS Security Essentials, etc. Preferably one with an anti-rootkit function AM - MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware is the gold standard right now, along with their MalwareBytes' Anti-Exploit. SpyBot if you're old school and want some power tools that come with it. But, there are other robust options. Other utils - ComboFix, TDSSKiller, HitmanPro, SuperAntiSpyware, ADWCleaner, GMER EDIT: The new entry is called White Cloud Security. inexpensive and touted as the new direction security is headed. Very small footprint and high performance. VERY secure, it relies on whitelisting/hashing? and restricted file execution. ((deprecated)) I cannot remember the name but there was a new entry into the AV field recently. I cannot remember the name of it but if I do I will try to update this post.((/deprecated))

***** I focused on ones I have dealt with either personally or professionally, does ESET have a free offering? And how is it to use?
@HalGailey10 жыл бұрын
***** I haven't had a whole lot of issues recently with slowdown aside from bootup. But that is where those new style AV's are going to be the top performers where there is no overt scan being done, its all front end limitation in the code.

White Cloud Security is the newbie I was thinking of.

***** I've not had the kinds of issues with AVG I have had with Norton or McAfee. I cannot say for sure on the paid version, but so far as I have experienced AVG offers little performance difference to Avast, a bit less speed than AdAware, and mixed to slower compared to MSSE. MSSE seems to sometimes be finicky on bootup while otherwise being largely faster.
@HalGailey10 жыл бұрын
***** AVG toolbar can be removed, if you downloaded it from somewhere else that may be from the source and not AVG. I don't get any purchase requests except for when they update to new version

corey drew bruce You are just a 17y old kid, so its understandable you dont know, what you are talking about, but still... Linux is hardly any more secure than windows, infact in some cases it might be the other way around. For example theres comparsion between exploits for windows xp and linux has (linux has almost twice as many): www.cvedetails.com/product/739/Microsoft-Windows-Xp.html?vendor_id=26 www.cvedetails.com/product/47/Linux-Linux-Kernel.html?vendor_id=33 Linux is simply not more secure, but the thing is, that its barely being used (mostly by autistic kids like you, that feel special when using it), so theres no point for malware writers to target linux, as the profitability is much much lower.

AV/AM software are useless! You can find decent RAT(the thing you use to control botnets and "infect" pc's) software for free, 50-100$ a month will get you a decent crypter(it's used to trick the AV/AM/firewall into thinking your malware is safe) and binder(you use it to merge the "virus" file with the file you want to infect others - like a crack for a game). Then you get on a 0-day upload tracker, get the newest software like 5 minutes after it's uploaded, infect the crack(it's probably infected already by the uploader from the 0-day tracker but who cares) and spread it on public or small trackers where you're an ulpoader(don't forget to write in your torrent description that the people need to turn their AVs off if it gives "false" alerts - it's just how the crack works... right... that's just in case when your "virus" gets outdated and AVs start detecting it and you need to wait for the hacker who sold you the cypter to update it so AVs don't detect it again). It's simple as that, you'll get tons of ppl for your botnet in no time... AV/AM/Firewalls detect only old/unsupported/unused anymore viruses/malware/keyloggers/whatever. The best way to protect yourself is to not download any pirated/unknown files.

Don't hate me, but I use Norton for my primary, & Malwarebytes for my secondary. Norton is my active scan app, & Malwarebytes I use to scan my PC every so often like once or twice a month. My main reason for using Norton is because it helps me keep tabs on all of my devices from smartphones, to tablets, to PC. I have 8 devices on Norton currently & I can easily control them all from my Norton account. Including the ability to remotely hard lock them if needed, & turn on & monitor GPS data if something gets stolen.

Dear Video Editor, I like Linus's face. I would like to see more of Linus's face and fewer stock images flashing across the screen. A few here and there are good to hit the point home, but this video, in my opinion, had far too many. Using maybe...half as many as you do would probably be the sweet spot. The text effects behind Linus are good! I like those. It's just the random photos that vaguely reference Linus's words (rage comic computer, science experiment kid) that I don't find as necessary. Thanks!

Perfect video to explain to my dad why having AVG & Malwarebytes on his laptop was a good idea. Some clumsy malware was trying, and failing, to connect him to Internet via a proxy ("Malware Protection 360" I think it was called). So I unistalled that, and some "Rocket" search bar nonsense, then reinstalled Malwarebytes.

by far the best security software I have been using since 2007 is *Eset smart security.* It is an all-in-one protection with anti malware, anti-virus, anti-phishing etc etc. Loaded with a personal advanced firewall as well. It is also incredibly light on the system as well. Though all my friends prefer to use *Kaspersky* instead. However, no matter what security software you use, a ccleaner should be on your PC always. Make sure you use CCleaner once a week.

I use COMODO Internet Security Complete and also paid for the Mlwarebytes anti-malware and have both on my system running actively. I don't notice any slowdown at all. Mainly because I never run scans, because it's real-time perfection, it scans things automatically that I click on (downloads, links, sites, etc).
