Kind of ironic that they interviewed a deaf guy but doesn't bother to put up captioning on the interview video?

Ben and Shelby not for the deaf viewers. How do we know what the interviewer is saying.

+Jonathan Terpak totally understandable!!!
@BenandShelby9 жыл бұрын
They really should have given captions in that case. Or provided the interpreter more screen time to interpret what the interviewer was saying

+Ben and Shelby oh hell, ok so i spoke too soon in another comment i guess. i thought because they were signing it would be easy to understand anyway, right?... or was it because it was too fast?

Paul Horton: Hey everyone, I'm Paul Horton, and cycle 22 of America's Next Top model is full of firsts. We now have one of the most exciting contestants here. The first Deaf contestant on ANTM. Mr. Nyle DiMarco is here with us in D.C. at DCW. Hey, Nyle how are you?Nyle DiMarco: Hey Paul yeah thank you for having me here.Paul Horton: So now you're actually from D.C. We know that you went to Gallaudet University. Tell us a little bit about how uh how your experience was at Gallaudet.Nyle DiMarco: Yeah absolutely. So first of all I grew up in the Deaf community. It was really a rather extensive community, and being used to the Deaf community I actually then went into Gallaudet. There are many people at Gallaudet from all over the nation. I am really proud of Gallaudet University. It is really part of my identity, and I really got that more fully being at Gallaudet University. It was really an amazing experience for people from all over the world who are Deaf go to Gallaudet.Paul: so you knew about Gallaudet all throughout your childhood and did you always know that that's where you wanted to go to school?Nyle: Yes absolutely. So when I was in the third of fourth grade I already had the vision that I would go to Gallaudet, because it is the only university in the world of its' kind. Paul and Nyle: and while I was there I took a... so what did you study?... (I think that's what was said. They were talking at exact the same time)Nyle: I graduated with a degree in math.Paul: math?Nyle: Yes, it was a pretty difficult field of study.Paul: with all these looks?Nyle: yeah, I know. I know. I had my life planned out, but my plans changed quickly after graduation. So we will see how things go from here. Paul: so what were some fun things that you did in D.C. while you were at Gallaudet?Nyle: I really loved biking. I went to the Mount Vernon. The Mount Vernon trail. I biked all over D.C. I also enjoyed going out with friends. It's a great place to do that. Also the beach uhh go see monuments. Go out with friends party a little bit.Paul: just a little bit, right?Nyle: more or less Paul: so how did the opportunity for top model come up for you? This is everything until 2:14. I am not able to finish now, so I will add to this later.

@potatopie88339 жыл бұрын
Nathan Bayarsky Oh was he making things up then? I did wonder because he didn't seem to be speaking everything in a little bit of an odd way I suppose. I had the thought that they could say he said anything almost.
@nbayarsky9 жыл бұрын
+boo rawr Well, the video that they DID show of the interpreter actually using his "expressive skills" (which is when the ASL interpreter is signing what the interviewer is saying) was fine, at times actually, really good...much better fluency and fluidity/clarity than the average interpreter. I'm not sure how other interpreters interpret, but at times, quite often actually, because I grew up immersed in the culture, when I'm voicing for a Deaf person, I actually come up with a voice inside my head, sometimes the facial expressions and way that the person is signing, I can actually"hear" them when they sign...I try to match the register of the Deaf person when voicing, to match the voice of what I believe the Deaf person sounds like, whether it's the emotion or energy of the person signing, or if it's a Male and they are signing very monotone like/ with minimal facial grammar I would voice in a different tone, interpreters call this "register". But when I was watching this
@nbayarsky9 жыл бұрын
+boo rawr continued.....but when I was watching this video...like I said sometimes literally a voice is talking representing the Deaf person. I know it sounds weird, but it happens to me sometimes...when the interpreter switched his role from expressive interpreting which was obviously a strength for this Guy (well he seemed much more comfortable at least to me) to receptiveness/voicing for Nyle, he seemed like a deer in headlights...he fell behind and was missing/omitting important grammar/information. He panicked several times and tried to catch up. He made Nyle to me, sound uneducated and nervous...good thing you could see Nyle, and he was glowing with confidence. It countered the ineptitude of the interpreter...
@nbayarsky9 жыл бұрын
+boo rawr continued haha...didn't realize the message would get cut off, ha...anyways So...I might be reading into it too much, and over analyzing. But what I was seeing/hearing I my head, and what I would've said were similar, but he was so behind and eventually he would catch up, but in the meantime some concepts were lost and meaning was omitted at times...as well, when he fell behind, when he was trying to catch up...he said most of what was signed but because he was panicking he said something's out of order, which isn't a big deal sometimes...I just think that, he made Nyle sound scattered and almost stuttering over himself...yet when the camera is on him he is glowing and confident and fluent as all hell ha... Maybe I'm being to hard on this guy, but THEY did change the interpreter from that interview when they did the actual show so...I just think this was super important and somehow feel like Nyle is so clear, it shouldn't have been an issue.
@nbayarsky9 жыл бұрын
+boo rawr last comment ha...hope you enjoy my views ha....maybe if you don't someone else will hopefully...I just feel like this was a very important/high profile/teetering on new celebrity status interview....the interpreter wasn't prepared... Or so it seemed. I am 33 years old, I grew up in a family with parents as Master Interpreters of ASL and Deaf siblings, one brother and one sister. My grandparents are Deaf, both sets (yes, all 4) and I married a Deaf woman from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico a couple years ago...I have been nationally certified since 2004 and have been in the interpreting field for 15 years. I attended the same University as Nyle and used to work with Ramon, the cycle 22 interpreter for the next top model show...as for Ramon, he is great...phenomenal expressive and voicing skills...nothing but the upmost respect for him, for real. I was just really happy that he was able to get Ramon for the show. Interpreter/Deaf Client relationship is so important.

As an interpreter in training student, the interpreter should be behind the interviewer, not sitting at his side. They are putting too much focus on him.
@felicismoon8 жыл бұрын
+Kyrie Katana I think the goal was to show the signing of the questions for Nyle to show people how he would be experiencing things during the show, they didn't show the interpreter speaking while Nyle was signing which was respectful and the interviewer also kept his focus on Nyle. If you've watched any of the recent interviews from DWTS I feel they have not been doing as good a job at keeping the focus on Nyle, many of the interviewers are actively looking at the interpreter (who is mostly out of frame) or only talking to Peta which I found a lot more frustrating.
