I ditched my smartphone apps in lockdown , no movies no WhatsApp no music no social media . I studied how to trade those 2 years for 15 hours straight like a mad scientist in a lab working . Zero distractions if I was on KZbin it’ll be trading podcast etc When you have zero distractions that time when you sitting alone your constantly thinking and planning ahead that’s when creative ideas 💡 start to pop in your head . Whereas if u was listening to music or whatever during that downtime zero ideas 💡 will pop in your head .. I’m not saying that’s how life should be forever but when your going through a transition and a learning / levelling up phase these sacrifices have to be made

Completely agree. Eliminate the possibility for any distractions or temptations and focus. Have been doing the same recently, though I have a playlist with piano music constantly on shuffle too. Perfect for getting in the zone and pushing your life forward. Just bought a dumb phone too as smartphone was still messing up my routine. All the best.

I think ditching the smartphone all together is a bit extreme. I went from a 6GB/mo data plan down to 200MB (for emergencies) and uninstalled all social apps and games. the phone is low end, too. I get the benefits of owning a smartphone (podcasts, notetaking, navigation, direct communication) without the distractions

The best advice I can give is something I learned from Tim Ferriss: turn off the phone and leave it in the car unless you absolutely need to use it. Turn it on, maybe once a day for 5-15 minutes, to check for messages and to stay informed. That said, I wouldn't completely ditch it, as they are invaluable to have nowadays, especially if you travel a lot or work in industries in which it's essential to have (like outside sales), just don't keep it on you 24/7. It's a huge time waster and productivity killer.

I believe it boils down to discipline. My smartphone adds a lot of value to my life (note taking, taking photos of receipts and important stuff, talking to my family over the internet who live abroad, ...). It’s true that you’ll waste a lot of time on things that don’t bring you joy or don’t get you anywhere if you’re only reactive and not disciplined. It’s important to keep in mind that not everything in life is a means to an end. It’s perfectly fine to indulge in things that bring you joy, even if they don’t improve a skill or make you more money. The key is to be aware of that and to be present.

Works extremely well for me without giving up on the benefits of a smart phone being able to carry "books" and other valuable courses with me where ever I go. Been doing this now for a while and it's absolutely amazing. So I feel that could be a way to get the best of both world's. Thanks for this kind of content, keep it coming!

I was using an old banger of a phone for ages, I got a smart phone not so long ago and its really useful. I still use it for the basics and don't sit there looking at it all the time. I actually prefer it, better quality photos and videos aswell. Overall though I think it depends on how you use the smart phone and what settings you have on it, he didn't need it to be buzzing when he got an email that notification can be turned off. I really like the example with how valuing your time with money is though, nice way of thinking about things.

I hate it when people have dinner at the table and look at their phone or play video games.

I agree in essence - but you can make use of a smartphone to check your broker, set up alerts at various price levels you want to watch, etc. What you should not do is install all kinds of crappy messaging apps (fb messenger, gmail with your heavily used email address, etc) as their constant notifications will drive you mad. There's also a way on ios / android to shut up all kinds of notifications from every app. So in essence you can use a smartphone but you need to tone it down use it almost like a regular phone, and use its smarty features only when you're on the go and want to check your positions.

This is a really interesting idea. Unsure how I feel about it though as most people also use their phone as a camera these days. I've taken a half-house approach whereby I removed social media from my phone (bar WhatsApp as my friends use this to organise social gatherings etc) and have made it so I hardly receive any notifications at all and have deleted most apps on my phone. I'm tempted to experiment and go cold turkey like Anton but I don't think it would suit me. I think I'll end up keeping a smart phone but just severely limiting my usage

Phenomenal point there that noise from the mainstream media will never make you money in the financial markets -- because it's **responsive**...of course, as with anything, this is not true 100% of the time (mainstream news can make you money on a rare occasion)...nevertheless, these are truly wise words, Anton! My question is: what about the ability to use trading apps on your smart phone? Wouldn't this be important for when you can't get to a computer?

What about using it for networking, building a social profile for business or checking open positions?
