Along with the Concertgebouworkest being one of the world's best and always a joy to listen to, I can see why Klaus Mäkelä's star has been rising so quickly. This whole performance was fantastic and brought out many subtle details in every movement. That was probably one of the most affecting interpretations of the second movement of this symphony I've heard. I've heard and played this symphony so many times that this piece doesn't always fully touch me anymore, but it's still one of my favorites when it's done so very well.

This series of concerts "Made in America" brought a number of conductors to Amsterdam. It appears they were auditioning for the post of musical director and conductor. Makela's appointment was announced less that six months after this performance. Honestly, it makes perfect sense. He will take on full duties in five years but his work with the orchestra will expand over time. This feels like the perfect orchestra for this young man and the musicians seem to enjoy working with him. What a delight for all of us.

After listening to Brahms' Fourth Symphony, played by the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, inspired by such a unique conductor as Klaus Mäkelä, from the first note of Dvorak's Ninth Symphony, the thought arose in my mind that in the case of Klaus Mäkelä I have the privilege of hearing the divine music of composers such as Brahms and Dvorat conducted by the best conductor of all time. In this recording, too, the entire orchestra proves to be composed of first-class soloists and once again the sound engineering is the crowning glory of this musical poetry by Dvorak, which is also unique in the entire history of music. The third and fourth parts of the symphony could express even more of his poetry if they were played a little slower, which is what happens here and there in the actual performance.

It is blatantly obvious the RCO has taken more than a great liking to Klaus Mäkelä, given the fact that they've invited him quite frequently in a rather short period of time. Is it too daring to imagine that the orchestra will approach him, one day further in the future, with the invitation to accept the position as its chief conductor (after Paris and Oslo and Lahti)....? I, for one, wouldn't be surprised at all. For now, we have this magnificent performance of an "old warhorse", sounding fresh and new as it it has been discovered just now, in addition to all the other ones by this team (a fabulous Sibelius 1 and Beethoven 6 among them). Bravi tutti!

From Whitman’s time the other giants are Emerson, Melville and Twain; from the 20th Century there were so many great writers it’s hard to name them all but Heminway’s( I don’t personally think he’s that good) his contemporaries in fiction, Fitzgerald and Faulkner; in poetry, Eliot and Moore. From later times you mention some good but very minor writers like M Cain and Caldwell( I assume you mean Erskine? Taylor is just pulp.)The others are once famous like Steinbeck( overrated by everybody including the Nobel committee) or still famous, but never considered major ( except by teenagers); really there are so many great American writers. It’s hard to know where to begin but here are a few that just randomly come to mind:Auden ( English and American) and Elizabeth Bishop we’re great poets, American poetry of that era had many, marvelous, poets; in fiction, I would mention Bellow and O’Connor, two immigrants(but we are a nation of immigrants) Of dazzling stature,Singer and Nabokov, and a native son, James Baldwin, and a native daughter,Toni Morrison . That should keep you busy for quite a while! But again, we have had many many great writers here.

I streamed it on tv when it premiered. When I wanted to comment somehow it wasn’t possible. It was incredibly beautiful. Vivacious, glorious, refined, elegant. Great Klaus Makela led the orchestra with such grace. The program was incredible. I streamed all the concerts that day. Loved the clarinet soloist Calogero Palermo. Was completely infatuated by him, the orchestra and of course the ambience of place. Sharing now but will watch it again. Thank you.

Gracias.
