I just can't help but think of a horror scene whilst listening to this. It's like someone is being chased by a monster and the tension is high, but he evades the monster in the end and escapes safely. But the door squeaks closed... does the monster notice?

i think people tend to project that sort of thing onto Webern's music now, but when he wrote it i think his intent was a very vast range of emotions and expression in a unique musical language for the time. What may sound horrifying may have actually been very joyful to Webern, this becomes more evident when you listen to his vocal music

@@bassoonistfromhell many film scores has envoked dissonance and atonality related to horror and thriller into the mindset of listeners. We've become programmed into associating dissonance with disorder and negative emotions and consonance with harmony, peace and order/safety
