My guess is that the flex of the plastic panel in the first half of the video was making it harder for the suction cup to stick to it. Whenever you pushed the cup up against the panel, it would bend even so slightly upward creating a space for air to go through between the cup (flat surface) and the panel (curved surface) when squeezing the suction button. It also looks like that the cups that Jason used in the movie had an ability to get some level of pull already when being pushed to the surface, even before squeezing the suction button (same principle that makes a plunger work). That would make the cup placement against a firm surface much easier.

wow yeah, a seperate outer thin plunger style suction cup that makes contact first, just to hold it in place, then a stronger inner suction cup that needs to be pumped. you could include a little motorized pump powered by a li-ion battery and just press the button once to start the suction as well probably. surely such a suction device is possible to be made.

I’m a professional who uses these for work. First, they are vacuum cups, not suction cups. Second, as the guys found out, they don’t just stick, even on glass, I have to push and sometimes push rotate to get the vacuum to work. Third, they work only as well as the seal has no leaks. Lastly, they do work better on horizontal surfaces. They tend to slip on vertical surfaces. Oh, those are top quality vacuum cups. Good luck guys!!

Буквально вчера смотрел комментарии промышленного альпиниста насчёт этого трюка из кино, и он сказал, что трюк в том исполнении как он показан нереален. На то есть три причины - 1) поверхность стекла по-любому грязная, а значит сцепление с ней будет непрочное; 2) нужно очень много сил чтобы вот так на весу прицепиться механической присоской; 3) есть очень большая вероятность сорваться вниз особенно при рывковых движениях. И Антон наглядно продемонстрировал, что так оно и есть. Кстати, мне лично намного больше понравился вариант исполнения этого трюка Антоном, когда он подключил ещё и ноги - так трюк смотрится гораздо интереснее👍

I bet it could be done like the movie if you used a thicker piece of plexiglass. It’s not very noticeable but when the first suction cup gets attached and weighted, it bends the glass just enough to distort the surface making the second one harder to attach. great vid tho :)

Hello folks. A “nice” try! But as a technician, I can give you some tips on what you should pay attention to when doing such experiments (without cheating ;-) ): 1) The Plexiglas plate in the floor test was too thin. It bent slightly due to the weight of the hanging person, and this reduced the negative pressure adhesion. 2) Also the plate was dirty. This also applies to the crane beam. Such surfaces should be clean - this helps the pump handles a lot. In case anyone should point out: the swimming pool in the film is so high - who should clean the bottom? I can only answer: there are definitely building cleaners who offer something like that! Plus, this is such a luxurious building - if I had the money to move into the penthouse, I would insist that the glass walls and floor on the outside be cleaned regularly. 3) As you said at the end of the video, it depends on the equipment. We once had our house windows replaced. I helped carry out the heaviest slices. The glazier cleaned his pump handles beforehand and made sure that none of the rubbers had any defects. When I asked, he explained that even the slightest crack could prevent the vacuum from building up.

As an industrial Abseiler who has worked on glass, these are the strongest hand held suckers. The next step up is a 3000kg Crain suspended powered sucker unit worth approximately $30K. I would also be interested to see how cams hold in a smooth alloy crack. Also, when he removes the panel of glass to exit the building that is not how glass curtain wall works.

This video was very interesting and well done. Loved the technique at 8:00, it would have been a super + to see that in the movie. I believe you plexy had some flex, and that kills the succion, certainly why the metal worked better, absolutely no flex in those massive pieces of metal. There are electrical succion hand devices for lifting stuff, those would work way better. All in all I agree with you, its duable. Super nice video.

Yea i was looking at the plexi flexing also, it makes sense it bent most at the edge and gave up at the end ,pre than in the middle. Thicker plexi / supported with suction cups from the middle on the opposite side. Also the plexi looked bit scratched also which doesn't help either

Just a fun tidbit… they make electric suction cups that hold a ton of weight and they grip automatically when you push a button. Pretty cool and definitely the kind of thing a professional assassin or spy would have! The legit and best ones are called Grabbo grips, but i think they make knock offs too. I’d recommend the good ones if you want to retry this again sometime.

As a glazier, I use these suction cups on a regular basis. If you forcefully slap the suction cup against the surface, you push some of the air out from in between. This means you need to pump it fewer times to achieve full suction. Also, the suction cups with metal pumps tend to work a little better than the plastic pumps.
