IMHO this composition ranks with the greatest of Dvorak's opus. Wonderful performance!

It comes from Dvorak's greatest creative period, which consists of Symphonies 4 through 7, the Symphonic Variations and Scherzo Capriccioso, of course the Legends, the three Slavonic Rhapsodies and the first set of Slavonic Dances, the Czech Suite, the Violin Concerto, the Third Piano Trio and the First Piano Quartet. He was never the same afterward on my opinion; the only works afterward that rate with me are the Piano Quintet and the Mass. I don't deny others the last two symphonies but they are not for me.

Gorgeous! I wonder whether these two young ladies used to squabble over whose turn it was to use the piano when they were growing up!

I would wonder how they would have handled No. 4 in C Major, the heavyweight and probably the greatest of the set. It is also the focal point when the entire set is performed, vividly heard in an orchestral performance.

I wonder if the Sulkhanishvili sisters had noticed that the melody at kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4Sqi3ehq9tjp5I is very similar to the melody (for piano) presented in the 18th variation in Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini." Dvorak's is 54 years earlier. Probably a coincidence, although both melodies are in D flat major. It is curious that Dvorak had this melody played just once (well, repeated in an odd minor key rendition right afterwards). It's not like Dvorak to not repeat beautiful subject matter, but he doesn't repeat here.

No. 1 in D Minor, No. 3 in G Minor, No. 5 in A Flat Major, No. 6 in C Sharp Minor, No. 7 in A Major. I vastly prefer these for orchestra, but regardless, these are an integral set, meant to be so performed, and should always be performed complete, the entire ten movements.

Judge on present performance , not ‘if’ , ‘but’ ….
@alger30414 ай бұрын
I cannot properly judge it when it is not given integrally as intended, but instead in fragments. For me there is no continuity, and each movement presented is cut from its context.

The 'Legends' are not very widely known, unfortunately, because they are the best of the best, and deserve to be widely played/ performed in concert halls. In my view-although one should not compare Dvorak 'Legends' with his piano Concerto-they are hundreds of times more inspiring than the concerto.
@crystalhwang95686 жыл бұрын
True!
@alger30415 жыл бұрын
The Legends come from Dvorak's greatest creative period; the Piano Concerto from his earlier formative years. Thus the comparison you make is well taken and actually, hardly surprising.
