I’m doing my observation hours right now I was at a hospital I seen outpatient, inpatient , spinal injury, neurological injuries amputee patients I also seen her do ultrasound on patients, the electrode too i learned a lot about the cranial nerves and their role she thought me a lot she was a pta for 44 years

PearlzN Blazerz I would try to get them done along the way and not wait until the last semester. You will be busy with those classes and all that stuff so it would be best to do them as you go when you get spare time that way you are not stressed and can enjoy your observation experiences.

What wonderful video and interview I all so liked and enjoyed the video of what jobs you can do with your career there was a couple I was not a where off, I did home care as a C.N.A. three things I did not like about it the traveling in the weather and gas cost all thou the company paid millage one way there was not enuf visits lined up and, it did not justify the cost of gas they only padded a fraction of the gas ,and being a new C.N.A. I did not like working by myself at first being new at something, I would say get one or two years in a clinic or other setting first, then that would not be a down fall, working in their home and working one on one would actually be a benefit and a prow working one on one with the patent. Iam taking liberal arts class and then trying to be an O.T.A. or P.T. A. my overall goal is to work in a school, I would all so like rehabilitating centers that is all they do or maybe an outpatient clinic. but I think I am most interested in work in the school, keep in mind Thay all pay different and working for a school seem to be lest, I love to help people I ended up helping my dad when he was really sick and this is what got me started in this, when I was a kid, I was like HealthCare or landscaping, I thought I was going to be a landscaper, I think It would be a good Ida to shadow the files if you can before you pout all the time and money into it .

I worked in a physical therapy outpatient clinic as an aide a couple years ago and I really liked it and liked it a lot actually. Now I’ve just been working a completely different job, in a warehouse but Im so tired of it and really wanna try to get into a PTA program but I’ve heard thats its hard to become a PT or a PTA. I havent been in school for years and have been looking into trying to get into a local vocational schools PTA program but Im so rusty with academics and don’t think I’d be able to keep up if I joined the program and am honestly intimidated because a lot of people that are currently in the program have bachelors degrees but I don’t have any kind of degree at all 😭

I jist finished my observation yesterday the required hours is 40hours, but I made 80 hours because I really like it actually I love it. It was a great experience actually I wanna get hired right away😅. When it comes on studying I am not confident enough, so far, my experience as a student here in th US is not good. I never get an A grade. That's why grades put so much pressure on me and it pissed me off.

It would be best to talk to the college because they will tell you specifically what would be the best bachelors degree to get depending on what the prerequisites are for that college. just a side note: Mehgan (the girl in other videos) got her bachelors in applied science after the PTA program and then transitioned to a PT program. But I would still recommend talking with the college ahead of time to see what they would say.

its absolutely possible depending on the colleges in your area. for example there are many community colleges in Canada, especially in ontario that offer the OTA/PTA program. i recommend becoming duo trained especially if you plan o working in a hospital environment.

I knew a PTA that was an amputee at my first clinic that I volunteered at. It was on an Army base. This is more common in the army. I say go for it. I originally wanted to be an orthostist or prosthetist.

No not really, maybe if you lift a patient wrong you might strain your back but you should use proper form with transfers. If you work in a hospital you need to take proper precautions as well when going in patient's rooms so you don't get infected with any diseases or anything.

Eric Zavaleta pretty much lol, Find clinics that you are interested in and pick different ones like a hospital setting or outpatient clinic as well. Then call or stop in and ask if you can job shadow a PT or PTA to obtain your observation hours.

Hey Antonio, I have the same difficulties as Dariel. I am not an amputee, but I always had difficulties standing for long periods of time. Now, I work at an airport. And I can stand for a couple of hours, but I have to have a seat option. I've always chosen and stayed away from careers based upon that. I know I can complete the PTA program, but are there areas of PTA I should focus on?? Yes, I am a very physical person, I love to exercise, jog, long walks, etc. But, standing for eight hours, always been difficult for me. Can you give me any suggestions. Thanks :)

I think that it kind of depends on the clinic. Some might be really busy where you don’t have much time to sit but others might have moments where you can rest. When I did my clinical rotations in 4 different facilities and my different jobs I had as well I had time to sit in each of them. Sometimes you have gaps between patients where you can sit and write some notes. That was just my experience though. Before you apply to a company I would just ask them more about how their clinic flows to see if it can accommodate for some rest time for you.

DO NOT GO INTO THIS CAREER 1. Your caseload fluctuates greatly under the unofficial law of feast and famine making your hours and, as a consequence, salary, fluctuate greatly. 2. If you’re conscientious about money and still want to do therapy, you’re going into the hospital, skilled nursing or home health settings. 3. Outpatient physical therapist assisting is a pipe dream unless you have a well to do spouse or enjoy living just above the poverty line so sports medicine better be your life’s calling or you’re going to be the lowest balled in the industry. 4. Insurance is always changing and at the end of the day you’re the last one on the totem poll, even below COTAs, so you’re going to feel any negative impacts the most. 5. If you haven’t sucked it up we’re forced into skilled nursing or hospital, be prepared for grueling work day in and day out forever. You’re an assistant which means you’re constantly doing the heavy lifting physically as well as mentally and you’ll always be asked for more work and less pay regardless of experience level. 6. There is zero room for upward progressing your career unless you become an instructor (Often requires more education and experience to be qualified or considered) or become a director (Which, as you’d be salary, they mercilessly work you into the ground with unachievable standard which is why there’s such a high turnover at these positions). 7. You’re stuck. It’s a dead end degree with no mobility. You’re trying to get out of the field after 5-10 years of experience however no employer cares because your skills have minimal to zero carryover to other careers. 8. Rates highly fluctuate. If you want to get 3-4 more dollars an hour, be prepared to live in nowhere land. If you want to live in the city the pool of PTAs is higher and you’ll be living with less money and a higher cost of living. 9. Retirement isn’t common. Health insurance is often poor (Unless you’re in a hospital setting). 10. BUT, you get to “work with people!” Right? Wrong. 50% of your time is pulling teeth to get people to work with you and if they’re difficult to motivate theyre often equally as difficult to work with physically. 11. Productivity standards. The bane of everyone’s existence. They’re often set so high so the company can skim as much profit as they can at your expense regardless of the ethical dilemmas it presents you or the burnout inducing fatigue it inevitably causes. What is productivity? Basically any time not interacting directly with patients works against you. Say you have 10 patients and have to see them for 45 minutes each, that’s 450 minutes treatment time. Easy right? Well, you have to take into consideration that you don’t get to stay on the clock between patients and maybe you can’t find a patient, maybe the patient doesn’t want to work with you despite the time pleading with them, maybe you’re in a large facility and have someone from every corner, etc. Well, the industry standard is typically 90% efficiency meaning you only have 45 minutes possible of non patient contact time per day. Easy right? Well, try adhering to it day after day and realize you have to endure it for the rest of your life unless you change careers and fast. 12. This list could go to 50 but I have to go

@@LiahB For PT, make sure you’re not confusing interests in fitness with medicine. The two run parallel occasionally but they’re not at all the same. You could end up working with high end athletes (You’ll need strong connections/networking and often fellowships post doctorate) but you won’t be working on the sexier performance training aspect. You’ll be doing massage on an ankle ligament then troubleshooting if the issue’s coming from the ankle itself or hip via various tests, trials and errors. The sad part about PT and chiropractic is many interventions have poor efficacy so you’re left developing your own approaches which can be frustrating. There are certainly things that work but an alarming variety that don’t and supported by “Independent study” type scenarios. Additionally, starting your own business can be hellacious as you’re not just a PT, you’re a full time marketer being paid 1/2 as much as chiropractic and receiving 1/4 less clientele. Salaries also fluctuate greatly by state and region. In somewhere like WA you could make 80K after a couple years but likely max at 100K after 20 years. Whereas CA you’ll hit around 120K but if you’re near a major city the cost of living diminishes any gains. I forgot to mention the 150-200K in debt on average. Back to treatments and settings themselves, you’ll likely end up in skilled nursing because it has the highest rates for new grads with debt. You’ll experience many sights, smells, toileting duties, pressure from management, fighting with understaffed nursing, getting yelled at, begging people to participate, lifting heavy people awkwardly (I’m strictly adhering to 50lb limits these days which colleagues frown on but my back freakin hurts). As a PT you’ll likely end up documenting unpaid after hours to keep your productivity at an acceptable level as to retain your employment. “You get to work with people though!”, well, yes you do, but not everyone is prepared for or appreciates what that all truly means. Ultimately, like social workers, it’s a calling. You’re getting relatively low pay for a ton of overhead and hard a$$ work to do it. Everyone’s going to say “Do it!” With smiles on their faces but it’s likely just because you expressed interest in a topic they know a lot about. For many schools there’s a volunteer hours requirement, you could enroll and check it out. However, after you get passed all the niceties, make sure to really focus on what the PTs are doing. Separate the human performance from the medicinal aspect. Do I like healing or do I like performance/fitness? They’re completely different. If it’s performance, go into nursing, specifically nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant. You’ll it’ll take 4-5 years but you’ll have half the debt and far more pay and opportunities (There’s traveling NPs/PAs in psych who’ll make 150K+ per year). The benefits are also you’ll understand the physiology of the body in depth but you can just get a personal training cert, kinesiology degree, and/or CSCS cert all while having a a solid salary in a career that has tons of potential in directions and is only continuing to evolve. Lastly, just be aware what a nurse in healthcare is or can be. There’s a lot of tough situations. You might have to put or retrieve things from people’s butts, stop a bleed spraying blood, clean wounds that have eaten tissue to the bone, break ribs during CPR, stand on your feet 12 hours per day and often at night. Not that you’ll be doing all these things forever but a newbie always has to pay their dues so to speak and as the grind wears you down you’ll have to keep your head up for continuing Ed and networking to get yourself out of that whole. All doable, but just be aware.

usually the caseload is the biggest stressor you will face as a PTA. If you have a busy schedule that can sometimes stress people out. And if you work in a hospital you do have the chance of people passing away and/or sickness that may stress you out. Usually on a day to day basis though there aren't too many stressors.

So it’s not entirely related to this video, but I recently got accepted into a pta program at a private college (which is still pretty competitive) and I’m also waiting for results from a community college pta program that’s about 5 hours from me. The community college one only costs $8500 for the whole program, which should be less because I have a lot of the general ed courses done. But the private college one costs $34,000. Im getting off topic, anyways, I was wondering if employers take into account where you did your program at when hiring you. Like do they penalize your application if they seen you did your program at a private college versus a community college or do they not care as long as you have your license and graduated from an accredited program?

From my experience usually they don't mind as much which college you go to. Some colleges do have a stigma though and employers might not like students from certain places but for the most part they are looking at you as an individual and how you provide care. Also they ask a lot of questions about your clinical experience and patient care versus what school you went to in your interview.

I'm a 26 year old stay at home mom of a 3 year old and have been thinking about this job the past 6 months. Before this I did not know what I wanted to do and deep down dont know if this is truly what I want. I've just been thinking about my family's future and this is the only job that pops into my head. I went to physical therapy 7 years ago for an injury and enjoyed it. I was never really interested/good at school (besides math, I'm excellent at math) so that has me scared to start school and I graduated back in 2011, so I'm a little rusty. Online schooling may seem easier for me but been reading that, that is not possible due to lab work and real clinical practices. Any advice?

I have commented this before in your other video, but Id like to say again because I'm really desperate for an answer. Do you think private institutions like Keiser, Herzing, Concorde, etc. can get me to land a job, be accredited for the licensure exam, and being able to work at other states? I really want to become a traveling PTA

Jomar Beran i would shift the focus to What can YOU do to get a job because ultimately it’s going to be your skills that will get you a job not the college. I don’t know if they are accredited, check their website to see if you see CAPTE certified to see if it’s accredited. You might have to take different licensure exams to be able to work in different jurisdictions. Hopefully these tips will get you going in the right direction!

I recommend please that you make a vid about those kinds of schools too because I'm sure there are people who even can't get into a difficult waiting list in a public school will want to find a different but possible direction :)

I know someone with BS in Kinesiology but still undecided due to schooling and debt in PT schools. I am thinking PTA might be a good choice for making some good money in the mean time, and gain experience but it is still 2 yr program. I have been a PTA for 35 years and was a PTA program director in in our program it was a one year program basically your first year was just all your academics and your second year was all your PTA courses so it was almost impossible to have a part-time job. Now when I went to school I did my academics the first year and my program actually was over a two-year. So I was able to work part-time as a technician.

I am currently only in 8 credit hours, my first semester. My program is a hybrid program; mainly online with 1-2 days on campus. I spend about 20-25 hours a week studying, learning, watching lectures, and reading. Next semester, I am in 15 credit hours and I can guarantee I will be doing 35-40 hours of school work! Plus trying to work. I work about 10-12 hours a week (fine dining serving) on the weekends.

It is doable but you have to be perfect with time management. My friend is in the program with me and works 40 hours a week. She does function on like 4 hours of sleep and gets A's and B's. Depends on how much you are willing to sacrifice.

Don't bother. It's a dead-end career. Don't do it! No stable jobs. Everything is PRN....hours are not guaranteed. You will end up waisted 2 years of your life if you do it. Trust me, do something else.

This is one of the few fields that isn't going to disappear. MANY actual professionals have talked about this subject and it's not that it "won't survive" but it is going to change. Anything that has to do with human physiology isn't going away anytime soon.
