I also personally think Jollibee is just the Filipino representation of fastfood like how LA does In-n-out. It's definitely not life changing but it does have a Filipino qualities in it (Like how they do Filipino spaghetti) so it became a staple recommendation by Filipino's. However, the next time you go, I definitely would recommend for you to try the next time you come here are Nilagang Baka, Tortang Talong, Banana-que, Kwek-Kwek, or even Sinigang again, but try it on Pork! For dessert, I feel like you'd also love Biko! There's so much more other than the most recommended ones

One thing about why Filipinos strongly recommends Taho to try is because we used to chase Taho street vendor every morning because they walk so fast. The moment you hear them shout "TAHO", we run outside of our homes and chase them because one moment they're in front of your house, you blink one time, they're 1 block away from you LOL. Definetely nostalgia. Plu, with streetvendor Taho, we can bargain with them and plead lol.

Glad you enjoyed trying Filipino food, Ant! Also a little info about Halo-halo, you really gotta put in just a bit work of further crushing and mixing the ice with all the ingredients so the flavors come together. You may have found the ice to be challenging to crush but when you are eating it outside on good summer day, it actually is advantageous to have it like that so it doesn't melt right away and you can still do the "halo" or mixing stuff for the full experience or bring it in your house on time to mix it.

I agree with the Jollibee commentary. Imo, people really hype it up because we all grew up with it. It's the taste of childhood. It's really good, but not even Jollibee can beat homecooked meals. I hope when you visit the Philippines, you get to try caldereta and other authentic Filipino dishes!

For the pancit canton, you should mix the oil and the soysauce first with the noodles so that the powder won’t clump. Also leave a very little amount of noodle water (don’t strain the water too much).

Thanks!! Also Jollibee IS the holy grail, but not because it's very life-changing delicious. It's a nostalgia thing. Filipinos grew up eating Jollibee, but when they have to work abroad, they'll miss it like they miss their family and friends back home. Nowhere outside of the Philippines can you ever find the taste of Jollibee except when of course when you're buying food from a Jollibee store. The reason Jollibee stores exist abroad is for the large diasporas of Filipinos that are craving for it. Jollibee heard it, realized they had potential expat costumers abroad, and so they put up stores in select countries. But I do think that for the exact same reason, Jollibee stuck with the recipe even abroad, so yes, it's nonsense when they say that the Jollibee here is tastier than abroad. And yes, our spaghetti here is always sweet. Even our KFC and McDo have similarly sweet spaghetti because that's the taste Filipinos grow up loving. The recipe is extremely different from the Italian spaghetti most countries are used to. Here, spaghetti is a dish mostly geared towards kids, why is why it's sweeter and filled with ground meat. In fact, I never knew spaghetti was supposed to taste like tomato sauce until I went out of the country. For most Filipinos my age, we find that kind of spaghetti too sour. And unfortunately, in the recent years the chicken in all fastfood shrunk--not just Jollibee. You'll notice it in our McDonald's and KFC as well. As someone who grew up eating from these fast food chains, I can confidently say the chicken parts used to be 2-3 times than what you get now. But I guess it's an inflation thing. Even the peach mango pie used to fill up that whole packet, now it's just half of it. But hey, look at the price. It's only a couple of dollars. While it may seem a bit pricey for Filipinos, I know how foreigners regularly spend 10-20 dollars a meal.

Yup, there's always the debate between Adobo and Sinigang on which one should be the national dish. I'm team Sinigang since I love how sour it is, and the veggies soaking up the soup is just great. Not that I hate Adobo, I just prefer Sinigang. Adobo is savory and really gets into the meat. Both dishes use both seafood and land animals ,and I do think they both equally deserve the title. (But also ,food in the Philippines differ depending on the region so exploring the countrysides is a MUST imo)

I appreciate you actually looking up food history a bit. Yes taho is douhua and it’s one of those dishes we in asia almost ALL have with our own local twists here and there (Baguio had strawberry syrup/jam and others might have ube and pandan) and I always wonder when it will become the next big thing to take over western markets… but people aren’t really a fan yet of tofu. Maybe once they find out the texture is like pudding…. Who knows? The reason taho is such an important staple to us is cause of the childhood memories of waking up early to the merchants screaming “tahoooo” and us only being able to eat it if we wake up on time. But I love how you can get it at the mall too. Cause I never wake up on time 😭😭😭

the "beef" with adobo and sinigang is [in my opinion] because of the origins of the two dishes! adobo is from spain/mexico and has spanish/mexican influence, and sinigang is technically "pure" filipino, and both dishes are staple foods in the Philippines that's served for dinner regularly:)
@Jl14478
@Jl14478 Жыл бұрын
I'd say adobo is also pure filipino as well, in the sense that it was a food preservation technique used in precolonial times. The connection to Spain/Mexico is more with the name, since it comes from the spanish "adobar" or to marinate. Both are still good tho

Sinigang actually has more variety than adobo. What you ate is Shrimp Sinigang which taste very different from pork sinigang which taste very different from beef sinigang and also from chicken and also fish. Then it will taste very different also when they change the souring agent which can be Tamarind, Kamias, Calamansi, Mango, Guava etc. so yeah try other versions. And also same, I don't like my sinigang too sour. I like it mine mild. So depending on which person who cooked it the sour level varies. Usually Restaurant Sinigangs are very sour unless its Guava Sinigang.

Really loved this video! So glad you tried everything and were honest about it. (I really love sinigang though, rip, but glad you discovered the greatness that is pancit canton.) You can get a lot of the stuff from this video back in the USA as well in Filipino markets and neighborhoods. 😊 Just an FYI if you ever feel like eating something again.

Not trying to sound rude but i found it funny how you looked for taho outside of mall of asia😭 usually the taho vendors sell it in towns or subdivisions and not outside of malls, but besides all that my Filipino heart melted by the fact that you traveled all the way from LA to here in the Philippines just to try our food, the effort 😭😭 thank you so so much

Korean who used to live in the Philippines here. For me, sinigang is a "you have to get used to it" dish in order to love it. I've first was icked by it at first, but I slowly appreciated it's sourness. Now in South Korea and now New York, I've come to miss sinigang.

Well Jollibee most of the time is just for comfort food and I agree with you it's kinda overhype on socials. The taste and how it's cooked can be a hit or miss since it's fast food. You should try the other flavors of Pancit Canton which is for me the best comfort food.

If you’re ever craving the instant pancit canton again, you can definitely find them at your local asian grocery store (or even seafood city if you’re near one!) back home in the states!

As a filipino, i also dont think that jollibee is the best fastfood or best chicken, but i still prefer it. I think what makes jollibee very close to us is the nostalgia and memories it brings. I think jollibee’s foods taste more homey rather than having extravagance.

While I love Sinigang and Kare kare, i think theyre not the best food as an introduction to Filipino cuisine bcs they have overpowering flavors. Sinigang is too sour while the peanut flavor of Kare kare is best paired with bagoong (a shrimp paste) which are both acquired tastes. Surprised you liked the Calamansi noodles tho bcs it's sour too! Maybe try their Chilimansi flavor if you can, it's the calamansi flavor but with chili! Great vid btw!! ❤

The technique to really enjoy sinigang if its too sour for you is to eat the soup with the fish/shrimp, veggies and the rice. You can add a bit of patis (fish sauce) too.

It seems the quality & standard are not as it used to be. But, the native sweets that are made of glutinous rice, is something to experience. There are plenty of unusual fruits & seafood, also dishes made with coconut. There's a variety of snacks made of corn and dried seafood as well. The best biscuits are Sunflower & Skyflakes, durian candies that you can't get anywhere easily, try that in Cubao shopping center. You haven't or weren't able to get through it properly, otherwise, there are so many foods out there that are really good & shouldn't miss to try.
