Le Roi Danse pour Anu Papp!
King of France, Louis XIV dons his ballet shoes for an outing in Anu's lavish production of 'The Sun King' for the Muse Dance Co. of "Second Life".
"Second Life" is the original Virtual World in the now-growing Metaverse. A social network based around 3D computer generated 'Worlds' each designed & created by its users and shared worldwide using the Internet. People from across the world 'meet' virtually to share an experience - in this case a one-hour dance show performance choreographed by Anu Papp. This video is a record of parts of that experience and not intended to be a historically-correct depiction of reality.
UPDATE: In January 2024, Anu revised the dance show and a video of the complete, half-hour performance can be found here: • Anu Papp's "The Sun K...

Trying to figure out if this is time travel with updated dresses from 3 different centuries (at least) and arm gestures from about the same number of (very different) dance styles. I guess 'fantasy' would cover it, but it's an unsettling mish-mash for anyone expecting a correct period reconstruction....which would, in itself, be an interesting project, but I guess it's not this one.

It was a modern reinterpretation of a Stage Show - not a depiction of reality. Did you know Tolkien used 'aliases' for the names of his Hobbits 'Merry & Pippin' to better-reflect the nature of their characters for a modern readership? Peter Jackson had the actors speak with modern regional British accents for the same reason. Same idea here. I want to know why Louis keeps looking at his watch.

Did you know that J.R.R. Tolkien tells us that in *reality* _Meriadoc Brandybook_ and _Peregrine Took_ would not have been called _Merry_ and _Pippin_ in the Hobbitish dialect of Westron but that he chose to translate their *actual* familiar names into these in order to reflect the same characteristics suggested by them to a modern audience. And as far as I know the King did not own a wrist-watch but at 1:10 you can see him check his, worn on his right wrist, to see whether it was time for him to dance again. Here's another spoiler: in the movie 'Gladiator', Commodus kills his father Marcus Aurelius and is stabbed by Maximus during a duel in the Colosseum and there dies of his wounds. This is quite interesting because in the real world, his father actually died of smallpox in Vienna and he himself was strangled to death in his bath, by the wrestler Narcissus, much later on. Now, what about those fireworks? In a theatre? Don't you think the Fire Department would have put a stop on those? I guess that's the beauty of Second Life (and Hollywood) - we can re-invent whatever we like for our own amusement, limited only by our imaginations and the limits of the medium in which we operate. This was a record of an event by a bunch of people (from all over the world) having fun and listening to some great music - that's all. It wasn't a history lesson - did you think it was?

Yes, of course, it's not intended to be a historically accurate depiction of courtly life - just an excuse to listen to some good music and have a little fun. Do you know what 'fun' is? You are lucky half of the cast members are not elves, fauns, or teddy-bears. But you are wrong about the music, as 'mllepumpkinpooh' pointed out 9 months ago, Rameau did not write "Les Indes galantes" until 20 years after the death of Louis XIV.

Thank you Maria Luiza for your interest. No - it is a video recording of a 3D computer-simulated world (like World of Warcraft or the SIMs) called *Second Life* (see wikipedia) running across the Internet. Each character (or Avatar) in the video is designed (appearance & clothing) & operated (moved around in the scene) by a different person somewhere in the world (I live in the UK) sitting at a computer. We can communicate with each other mostly by typing but we can use microphones & talk to each other. So it is a Social Network and we make many friends 'In-World'. What you don't see in the video is the chat we have going on (not during the show though!!) Having said that about 'operating', at an event such as this 'show' each (real) person will get their avatar to activate a pre-set sequence of actions designed by one of us who acts as the 'Choreographer' - in this case it is Anu Papp who currently lives on the West Coast of the USA. Anu also designed the 'sets' and scenery (which can either be built from scratch - using tools provided by Second Life or purchased from other 'Creators') for the show and selected the music that we all hear. This is very much her production. The dance animations are produced and sold by real dancers wearing motion-capture suits - most last about 30 seconds, so it is up the choreographer (Anu) to choose and sequence the various movements (it helps that she is a real musician in real-life) in the same way a choreographer would direct the dancers of a real show. My role is simple - I capture/record the computer screen as the show is performed - I can control the position of the 'camera' (like controlling a drone) and the lighting (although I try to stick closely to the stage lighting Anu has designed - my computer isn't as powerful as hers, so I have to try to get as close as I can without my computer slowing down so much that the video flickers too much and become uncomfortable to watch.) The whole show would have been about an hour long. Then I edit the captured video using a standard video-editing program and set the music to make a short 'trailer' for the show. I can't remember but I may have put a 'full' recording of the show on KZbin as well. Apart from the shows Anu has created a fully landscaped a 256m square 'chunk of world' (called a 'SIM' in SL, rented from the Second Life owners Linden Labs) - and I video'd 'myself' walking around it a while ago - the video is called *_Anu & Ferdi's "Memoires de Ravenhart"_* It has changed a little since then - for one thing it's been snowing there. I have posted trailers or full-videos of other shows of Anu's and my favourites include *_'State of Grace', 'Portraits'_* and the most recent one was *_'Chicago'_* that you might want to check out - just search KZbin for 'Glynola Productions' or 'Glyn Morgath' (older videos/montages). There are a good number of SL fans who post photo-realistic 'photos' on *_flickr_* too - well worth looking at if you are interested in photography. If you have a reasonably modern computer (a decent graphics card would be a bonus) - why not get a free account and come and join us? Automatic Translators are available 'in-world' if needed. Glyn Morgath (one half of _Glynola Productions_ - my real-world wife is the other half - *Viola Sweetwater* - we sit across the table from each other, lol.)

That's right - Second Life is all about getting away from Reality. Reality sucks! This fantasy show of a production in a pretend modern theatre brought many smiles to: the real faces of the real operators (for whom this video was made) of the pretend 'performers' who 'put-on' imaginary costumes and came 'together', from across the world, to pretend dance to real but anachronistic music (some written 20 yrs after Louis XIV died - you missed that chance to level even more criticism - you also missed a chance to criticize my beard - it's ok, it was a pretend beard) and engage in a specially choreographed hour-long escape from Reality; to the few dozen real-time pretend audience-members and to a good number of deliberate or accidental viewers of this video-'trailer'. It's nice to know you too had a laugh. What made you think it was purporting to portray a historically accurate event? Next time we perform Les Misérables we'll invite you along - you'll fit in nicely. Now, where can we find something that you have created on which we can pour scorn. I'm sorry you had to watch this.

In 1669 Louis XIV commissioned a very special 'concert' to celebrate the 'Future of France'. One of his favourite costume designers Jean-François Lemonnier of Poitiers was commanded to make a new type of gown that would allow a danseuse to dance more freely without her gown impeding her leg-movements. His solution was to remove the under-frame and petticoats holding the shape of the outer gown and replace the outer (and now, only) layer with vertical strips, or 'rubans', of (initially) calico (but later, silk of course) painted with ten (yes, ten) layers of the newly discovered latex while draping the fabric over a barrel. Once dried, the 'rubans', once stitched together at the top, would hold their shape unaided whilst allowing great freedom of expression in dance - a great success. But then Lemonnier faced another problem - the ladies' bare legs were prone to passing between the 'rubans', something that privately delighted Louis but was hardly acceptable in court. So, Jean-François designed long linen 'leg-sleeves', in the same colour & design as their gowns, in an attempt to preserve their modesty.' We would call these 'Glitch Pants' today - but, at the time, they soon became known as Longue-Jean's and were loved by the ladies who complained that their silk dresses were insufficient to keep them warm in winter. Some of his other gown designs used at the concert were not so well received, they were considered too 'futuristic', and were put away for many decades until Lemonnier's great-grandson, Daniel, reintroduced them to the world. I'm glad you enjoyed the recreation.

@@joas3324 Thank you for your interest - but you can't - I made it up. I was being somewhat flippant when rationalising a limitation of *Second Life* clothing. Flexible clothes (such as skirts but also non-flexible items like hats) are 'attached' to a point on the skeleton but are not treated as solid - so, for example, the legs can poke through the dresses (often disguised by wearing 'glitch pants') or the head can poke through a hat. A later solution is to add an 'alpha layer' to the hidden part of the skin to make it invisible but this can have odd effects too. Non-flexible clothes (like shirts, socks, gloves and trousers) actually become the outer layer of the avatar by deforming the 'skin' onto which a 'painted' image of the item is applied (think of a wooden toy Nutcracker soldier). In both cases it is a challenge to produce a realistic effect that works with all avatar movements. Ingenious solutions are employed, for example, a long coat might be made as two separate parts - one of each type - a 'painted-on' top and an 'attached' skirt. If this period of history interests you, then check out our latest video which is set in a recently opened SL recreation of Marie Antoinette's Petit Trianon and its gardens: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5KzpXype5qfb6c (Anu Papp's "Les Jardins du Petit Trianon")

Just for interest, one of your concerns has been addressed for our latest performance and I have posted a new 32 minute video of the complete performance kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5Sbo4tvrLZ6g5I . Only occasionally do legs & feet poke through the dresses where I had to use footage (no pun intended) from the rehearsal. In 1669 Louis XIV commissioned a very special 'concert' to celebrate the 'Future of France'. One of his favourite costume designers, despite being a hardened Satanist, Jean-François Lemonnier of Poitiers was commanded to make a new type of gown that would allow a danseuse to dance more freely without her gown impeding her leg-movements. His demonic side emerging, Lemonnier introduced an insidious 'temptation' - the ladies' bare legs would briefly show passing between the 'rubans', something designed to inflame lust in the audience and in particular Louis but was hardly acceptable to the dancers who complained about the coldness of the rooms in court. So, Jean-François designed long linen 'leg-sleeves', in the same colour & design as their gowns, in an attempt to preserve their seductiveness while keeping them warm. We would call these 'Glitch Pants' today - but, at the time, they soon became known as *Longue-Jean's* (read it with a French accent) and were loved by the ladies whose descendants would embrace 'leggings' whole-heartedly. Some of his other gown designs used at the concert were not so well received, they were considered too 'futuristic', and were put away for many decades until Lemonnier's great-grandson, Daniel, reintroduced them to the world. I hope that, nevertheless, you enjoyed the modern recreation of the concert - like this reply, it is a work of fantasy & imagination (as mentioned in the notes for the video) and a hallmark of Second Life.

No, it's not - it's CGI. Every element of this performance is determined by human intelligence - only the actual rendering as a 3D scene is left for the computer to generate. The short dance animations are either hand-crafted or motion-captured - these are then assembled into dance routines for the CGI characters (avatars) to 'perform'. The appearance of the avatars is a combination of Anu's specified outfits (often hand-crafted by one of the Muse team - even down to choosing the weight and flexibility of the material) and each individual operator's choice of body, face and skin - each tweaked to the operator's preference. The set is a combination of items purchased from specialized creators or hand-crafted items by Anu herself. The whole is choreographed by Anu to music of her choice. The 2024 version of this show (see notes) has been given an overhaul, with new costumes and a few other changes.
