Currently building an ASO (finished my forge last week) and I agree it is probably more work than the finished product is worth. But it's about the journey, fun and satisfaction when you're finished. Thanks for sharing.

Really nice and inspiring DIY anvil improvement. I remember well the amount of work to make your own anvils, specially when you just have a limited assortment of simple tools at your disposal. I would have made the welding chamfers to get a much deeper welding, but your anvil seems to work ok. Now Mr. Pearson, you have a anvil, not an ASO. An ASO is just an Anvil Shaped Object that is worth nothing for work but to use it as a door step, boat anchor or paper weight! An Aso is made of low quality material, poor design and finishing that looks like a classical anvil but brakes easily upon impact of an hammer. You have a real anvil that you are building for some time and according to your videos, works perfectly.

you're creating an heirloom tool, nice job. alternatively you could probably have just welded some thick walled square tube of the appropriate dimensions to you die anvil for a hardy hole. keep on forging.
