Two great sole. Way back in the beginning of the 70's I lived in lowestoft, the guys always used a metal boom setup. They were made of brass, brass body and boom with only a short nylon snood. These guys always caught well. Turn the clock on a lot of years, a mate of mine knew a guy who used copper booms off the Suffolk coast and caught loads of sole. Its believed to be the electrolysis saltwater/Copper or brass that tickle their whiskers. In coloured water it seemed to work well. Great video as always

A good bit of fishing there Phil. I don't know of anywhere else that can be that messy. LOL. I fished it many years ago and needed a hose pipe to clean down afterwards. Some cracking Sole you had, shame you didn't end up with a couple more. As always, a good video with plenty of info. Tight lines.

The mud is awful but is worth it when you get quality fish. It’s not so clever when you get just a few straps or even a blank though! Loughor is muddy in parts but nothing like the Newport area. Thanks for watching mate!

Good couple of sole Phil..i use booms for all my sole fishing. I find they outfish any other rigs..possibly they hold the snoods hard on the bottom or maybe something to do with vibration that attracts the sole....Les Moncreif showed me that when i was a young lad behind the powerstation at Dungeness...once a sole mecca...alas not anymore...great video👍

@BanditFishingUK
@BanditFishingUK 3 жыл бұрын
This is the Farmfields area near Newport. There are a few areas of peat ledges between Newport and the New Severn bridge. They are fishable on the smallest tides and you can still get pushed back off them in to the muddy marsh like I was here so not the easiest places to fish but the rewards can be worth it. Do a bit of homework on a map app and you’ll find the better looking spots. Good luck with the sole Richard.
@richardg1781

Thanks Phil I’ll do my homework and go down low water to have a look small tides are better then thanks for the info

Makes you want to get out - well done and good fishing. I must cross the bridge some time. What is the maximum tide you want to be fishing the ledges on Phil? (I use Avonmouth on the English side - do you use Cardiff scale?) Regards
@BanditFishingUK
@BanditFishingUK 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t really matter what scale you use. You want the very smallest tides give or take a few inches. Literally the smallest of the small neaps or it’s very difficult to get fish up and over the ledges. Thanks for watching 🎣
@deanwhittle2132
@deanwhittle2132 3 жыл бұрын
Could you tell me how to get to that mark for the sole please?
@BanditFishingUK
@BanditFishingUK 3 жыл бұрын
I guess there are a few ways to get there but I drive to the end of saltmarsh lane and walk along the gravel path until it meets the sea wall and hop over the fence. You’ll see the peat ledges. Be careful not to twist an ankle in the mud and only fish it on small tides. Don’t Wade near the edges of the ledge, a few anglers use canes to mark the edges but I don’t risk walking out when they are covered anyway.

@@BanditFishingUK morning lloyd iv been buying ready made rigs off Ebay but i think it's time i made my own I'm just not sure about hooks as there's so many to choose from 👍
@BanditFishingUK
@BanditFishingUK 3 жыл бұрын
You’re right the choice is endless. My hook of choice is a sakuma Manta, not the manta extra as that’s a strange gauge hook. The manta is a lot softer and suits me for fishing rough ground. I use the manta in a size 3/0, 2/0 and size 2. That covers 95% of my fishing. Another very similar hook is the Varivas Big Mouth available through Veals online.
@BanditFishingUK
@BanditFishingUK 3 жыл бұрын
I (Phil) agree with Lloyd but I also love the Tronixpro Big Dog in a 2/0 and 3/0 either as a single hook for crab when chasing hounds or as the top hook on a pennel when after rays. I don’t use them on the rough anymore because they are so strong that if they get stuck you lose your rig and shockleader everytime. For clean ground they are spot on 👍🏼
