His dry humor is priceless. 😂 I wish I understood about 30 years ago that even though I noodled on the guitar for hours, I was never really practicing. It was only about 2 years ago that I started doing exactly what Adrian prescribed here, and it has made all the difference.

I was in a hen party one day and we were chatting about a variety of topics. One gal mentioned her son wanted to be a professional musician and had gone to New York. I had been a professional, not guitar, in New York so I thought I could give some advice. It got around to this: she stated her son practiced half an hour a day. I cooled the conversation by saying that I used to practice 6 hours a day. I would also take up to 2 lessons a day from very accomplished musicians. Six hours is a lot but I was working on Broadway at 18 years old. You can choose what level of effort is right for you and that can change as you make progress. Being organized is important and working above your current level is as well. Adrian is a treasure.

Hmm, yes and no. You need to put the hours in but I feel like doing 42 hours a week in addition to networking, gigging, working on portfolio etc etc is bordering on excessive. You could end up playing in a pretty bloodless kind of way, surely?

after getting a soft tissue malady from practicing 7 hours a day for a few months...I tip my hat to those who can do this, survive and then go on to accomplishment..I still play and accomplished great improvement it was worth the troubles.

@@andrewtucker94 Hmm, no and yes. Some people convince themselves they can still succeed by doing less than their contemporaries. Many musicians are lazy too and "networking, gigging and working on their portfolio" can mean doing not much that's productive. Sitting aroung with friends getting stoned seems to be a popular definition of networking.

Thank you so much Adrian for those advice. It gave me a boost and a positive feeling about my motivations to play and practice guitar on a regular basis. Your tutorials have changed my perspective and gave me strength and confidence. Cheers from Canada.

Adrian - you got my attention right @ the beginning: get organized. The rest of your information is great. I see how I can improve by being disciplined. I got a notebook and made a step by step weekly plan to work on new things every week. I will be focused and improve without burning out. I haven't been improving because I keep playing the same things over & over without challenging myself. Also I have looked @ many of your videos & can use a lot of your instructions to obtain scales & drills that I can learn. I was having difficulty finding new things. And I will get a timer. That sounds like a very good idea. Thank you. 👍☮️🌞🎸

I’m my past I use to practice 4hrs a day ... write up an itinerary per day then I reduce practice time down to 2hrs many yrs ago. After several years of down time because of life & health issues I decided to play again recently and not knowing where or how to startup again . I started up with blues scales again except I only play it for 1hr including moving them scales all over the neck , your vids with 3rds , 4ths , etc are really good and cannot wait to get there... Then I pulled out my copy of Black Sabbath “ iron man “, I learnt 1/2 of this 5yrs ago and now I play beginning to end of song sloppy but I started this song this early week. What I’m getting at is that I’m more productive playing one hour with 2 items than many hours with lots of homework. I tried shredding, didn’t like it SO, I’m staying the course for Classic Rock like I use to do, oops I played bluegrass as well a decade ago. Like your subscription page , keep up the gr8t work! 🤘🎸🤘

I like to learn 1new song per week, problem is by the end of the month I have forgotten the 1st song... I have been playing the same 4 songs for 30 years! Thanks for the advice.

Same here I’ve learned 100s of songs over many years however the only way I learned a persistent repertoire was when I was in a covers band and constantly rehearsing at least then I could play 15-20 through consistently.

started in 1992 and relied on persoanl obsession rather thn discipline, but i've learned to beware of over-practice. stop before you get frustrated and let the muscle memory work overnight, or two nights. it seems to do a lot of work without you even touching the guitar.

Back in the day when I started to learn, going to music school or paying someone to give you lessons was the only way to go about it. I went to guitar lessons for ages and still never learned to play properly, so I wouldn’t recommend it. Lessons are for people who need someone to tell them off when they don’t practice enough. The only thing music school can teach better is music theory. When I was learning a classical instrument as a kid they tortured us with 1h of theory every week for 3 years! I hated it at the time, but it now helps me a lot when writing.
