With Sutton Foster, Joel Grey, a terrific cast and Cole Porter's music, it doesn't get much better than this. These classic shows are a legacy which we do well to revisit from time to time---no politics, no social engineering, just pure, unbridled fun.

We're doing this play for our highschool school spring musical, and i noticed that some of the lines of the songs changed. i play Mrs. Harcourt, and her character reminds me of Mudd's wife in I Mudd of the original star trek series. the one thing about this that i don't like is that the songs get stuck in your head, and it's difficult to do homework and study when you can only think of these songs.

Aren't the arts taught in public schools any more--at least in high school? Part of cultural literacy is to be able to identify classical works of literature, music, and art. In four years of high school English, we were taught Greek, Roman, British, French, American, German, etc., writings of prose, drama, and poetry (in addition to four years of a foreign language, two years of Latin, and six months of basic Greek). We had art appreciation as well as applied techniques in various media. We were taught how to read music and were exposed to the music of Stephen Foster, Rogers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Gilbert & Sullivan, Brahms, Mozart, and a plethora of others. Playing piano and/or an instrument was optional, but choral music and basic theory of music was mandatory. I didn't attend a private school. It was a public school in a relatively poor small town community. However, our parents ensured that we got the best possible education at their (taxpayer) expsense and were involved in our schools as were the members of the community at large. So what has happened in the last 65-75 years of public education? Folks, for the millions of dollars dumped into public schools today, you have EVERY RIGHT to demand an accounting of where that money actually goes. Look at your administrator salaries. Six figures plus benefits? How many administrators? How many specialized departments (with staffs)? In other words, are your taxes going to educate your children, or are they going into ever-increasing administrative costs at the expense of YOUR CHILDREN?

@musicalsaremylife17 Yeah, I saw her in Shrek and then in concert in January. She's a phenomenal performer, true triple threats are so rare these days. I don't know if I can think of a better role for her than Reno; the show looks fantastic, I snagged front row as soon as tickets went on sale. Have you seen her?
@heatherg19493 жыл бұрын
My thing about Anything Goes... I would love to be Reno Sweeny, I think that's my dream role. But when my high school did it (ensemble not Reno), the dance breaks killed us, we did not have enough people who were that strong of dancers to have (what felt like) a five minute long dance break in every song.

It's sad that so many songs today are thought of as "new" when in actuality, they were either written or composed decades before and most young people today have no clue. It's great that these performers are giving credit to the geniuses of long ago.

It's not fair to compare those who perform in revivals to those who originated or have previously played the roles. The true gauge of a performer's success is to go to the material and see how believable, truthful, and in line with the creator's vision and intention they in fact are. When doing that, I have to say that Foster, in my mind, is not believable as Reno. Without knocking her talent, comparing her to others, I believe that she just wasn't right for the role. Just my opinion.
