Hi, I'm Ray - G4NSJ. This is a quick look at my new Anytone AT-778VU 2 metres 70cms transceiver. This amazing radio is packed with features and is well worth considering if you want to get onto the 2 metre and 70cm amateur bands. It also covers the marine band.

From a "19 set" to this! These Anytone and Stryker radios are truely fresh approaches to radio rigs. Most rigs are a seminar night to program all the local channels and tones and such, but the unique display is as cool as the cast aluminum chassis.

Hi ray , great vid , totally agree with modern cars , I remember fitting my rigs in an Austin maxi , Austin ambassador so easy , I bought the Zascon D 9000 dual band with self repeat cross band and with mw sw receiver built in as well as air band , thus comes with remote kit as standard installed in my LR Discovery 4.The head is fitted under the dash on RHS , the base unit fitted under the passenger seat on a bracket. I found a location on existing metal plate . I also fitted 2 extension speakers in the left and right footwell . Regards 73 mark G8RDE

Hi Mark. Those were the days! I hate the design of modern cars. No character at all. Oh well, no point in moaning! Cheers, Ray.

Great video Ray. The thing I like about these Chinese radios is the price. If you break or lose one you can just buy a new one. 73s KN4IFI

Ray, although I am not familiar with this particular radio I expect it uses a similar chipset to some of the Chinese handhelds. For us old boys the technology is pretty amazing, no IF.. the receive rf is routed into an IC that takes care of FM demodulation, ctcss etc. The same chip does FM, the tones etc and outputs low level RF. The display is taken care of by another IC. Effectively a QRP dual band transceiver in a single chip... I maintain emergency services radio gear for a living, for under £20 a little UV-5R is a handy little monitor receiver while on site. They are not gods gift to receiver performance or spectral purity but amazing value. Yours is almost certainly a cleaner transmitter, I also have an Anytone 878uv, a dual band handheld that does analogue FM and DMR.

Radio Workshop, on the lighthearted side the UV-5Rs being so cheap means I felt compelled to buy them in multiple colours... yellow for marine, red for fire etc...

Is the 778 UV better or worse than the 778 vu? Or are they the same you just keep getting it backwards? For the record I cannot find a778 Vu anywhere

Hi Shane, sorry about the cock up. It's me getting old and confusing myself... and others! There have been over three thousand views and you're the only one who has picked up on my mistake. At least you were listening! Well done and thanks for letting me know. All the best, Ray.

Hi Ray Really enjoying watching your videos. I'm getting back into amateur radio after a few years layoff and I've bought myself a Retevis RT95 which I believe is the same as your Anytone transciever. I'm really pleased with it but just want to check what the bandwidth settings should be. I've programmed in all the simplex and local repeaters all with narrowband setting (12.5 kHz on my radio). I see that you have your simplex set at narrowband but the repeater bandwidth is on mid setting (20kHz). I've looked at several videos on this radio and everyone seems to have different bandwidth settings. What is regarded as the correct bandwidth for both simplex and repeaters? Any help much appreciated (I've not done much 2m and 70cms in the past mainly qrp HF) - I'm also using a Watson W50 which has been up many years. Thanks and 73's Mike M3XGV.

theyareouttogetme1 Hi Mike, great stuff. Welcome back to amateur radio. Repeaters vary, some like 12.5 and others don’t. I think simplex narrowband is best but don’t worry about it too much. Hope to work you soon! Cheers, Ray.

Brilliant radio for £100. I should just go and do my Licence, my mates are on it, but the one I have most to do with moved so far away I can't reach him except on a phone. We used to chat for hours on the radio with a lot listening (CB) but he and a couple of others went through through their work so had passed. I was going to go through it when he moved away so I didn't see the point, then I got married, so priorities changed and I never went through it. I wouldn't transmit without a licence, or do pirate radio, no that I would leave to others. I have used other peoples radios though, but talking to my other mate who lives on top of a hill here, he says 2mtrs and 70cmtrs is dead here with no one on it. Not listened for a while though so can't confirm it. Should I bother with Ham Radio? At these prices, maybe I should think about it again. I am more interested in SSB though so I would need to get the second part of the licence. Great video though Ray, keep them coming, it is getting my interest going again in radio.

bob4jjjj yes, go for your license, you won’t regret it. The bands can be quiet here but there’s usually someone monitoring. Cheers, Ray.

@@g4nsj It might have changed, but it was quiet here before it went quiet, according to my mate on top of the hill. However, lower down it can be busy at times. Thanks for the encouragement Ray.

@@ianharling9569 I was speaking to a mate here and he says it is dead up here at the moment. I think there is to much just asking for location and contact details. That is fine for contests but I like to talk a bit more. I like SSB better then Morse, but then I have not used it since I was in primary school. In fact I have forgotten it. I don't know if out teacher was a Ham, I don't think he was, but he spent a 10 minutes every day teaching Morse. I think he was just old fashioned and thought all communications were still done that way, mind you he was near retiring age. He did retire when I was there and the new teacher was all change, no more Mores, use the top line of your note books (jotters I think she called them). She was totally different and had no interest in radio, computers (though she was a lot younger) at least the old teacher tried to teach us saying a computer was on or off in its logic. But not having seen one, it didn't make much sense 1 & 0 means nothing. If they had put a computer in front of us it might have made sense. I used to like CB, I was a bit naughty when it first came in, but when we got channels I was law abiding, even got a licence, which was way overpriced, but the Government thought they could make money off us. However, I will get my licence as a lot of CB's did, but I never had the time. Always working and then family life got in the way as well. I listen to the repeater (if it is still there) and hear nothing up here! My mate said it was dead, but I didn't believe him, but nothing comes up on the scanner either. I will need to visit the local club to see what is going on up here. It is so long since I visited no one will know me. Anyway, thanks for the encouragement, it is a kick up the behind I need. I still can't find time to do it.

@@BoB4jjjjs Try listening around the bands if you have a shortwave receiver. If not you can listen for free on a smartphone by using one of the Web sdr receivers. If you Google Websdr it will take you to several online receivers around the world and that is a great way to listen.I use the one at Hack Green in the UK.
