Great video! I am happy that I wasn't the only one that ran into the "Professional" and "Amatuer" modes issue and had to figure the solution. I am actually working on a video on some other topics of the 578, mainly the CPS. I got my 578 programmed in just under one hour by exporting from my 878 and then importing to my 578. Of course, without thinking, and AFTER having it all set up, I checked and found that there was a firmware update; so I did this. Then I went back and repeated all of the importing and reset all of the optional features. All in all, I love this radio, but also understand the frustrations that go along with technology, (I work in the I.T. field.) 73's / Steve / K4SRF

As for the 578 Tri-Band Pro version of the radio going up to 480MHz, YES and NO. It will RECEIVE the entire band, but it will only transmit in the amateur band. For the radio to transmit as well as receive outside of the amateur band you have to get the Part 90 certified version of the radio, which I also have here. That is basically the only difference between the two PRO versions of the radios. I originally thought the same thing, but when I received the tri-band version I quickly found out that although I can receive outside of the amateur band, I was not able to transmit outside of it, so I had to purchase the dual-band commercial version of the 578.
@HamRadio25 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'll test mine. The question I normally get is "will the radio receive up to 480?" Because they have some commercial or public service frequency they want to listen to, but they know they shouldn't be transmitting on.
@mikeklemens5 жыл бұрын
take a look at 14:30 and on in the video. Also another programming source was talked about elsewhere noting "a stand alone software called At_options which allows you to put the radio into Maint Mode (band 14) and gives you 136-174, 220-225, 400-520. Factory it comes 136-174, 400-480." from the first HWB 878 review in the comments. Mike N6IMY
@WH6FQE5 жыл бұрын
@@mikeklemens Correct, yet, if the radio was purchased as the tri-band amateur radio, it does not have the Part 90 certification, so although it is possible to hack the radio to get it to transmit on those frequencies, you are still not legally able to use the radio to transmit on those frequencies. I need to be able to transmit on both bands and the only way to legally do it is purchase the commercial version of the radio and just lose the 220 band, or have both radios, which is what I chose to do.
@WH6FQE5 жыл бұрын
@@HamRadio2 Yeah, it will receive on those frequencies right out of the box.

Awesome vid man. I wish it was a week earlier....lol. I had the same issue, tried the same steps but it didn’t work. I was thinking it was the difference between the dual/tri band....long story short, I spent 2 straight days manually copying all 2400 memories into the 578. The only positive I had was I was able to clean up the plug I originally downloaded from the Facebook group.
@HamRadio25 жыл бұрын
Yea like I said in the video, one dealer I spoke with said there wasn't a way to do this, but that just didn't make sense to me. I'm glad I got it to work, but it is good to clean-up your codeplug sometimes also. I need to do that myself.

Ham Radio 2.0 amazing... thank you so very much. I love this little radio other than it’s so loud when the APRS beacons and I also think it’s weird that you don’t need an APRS channel. It’s definitely different but works.

Anyone with Anytone programming expertise, can you reorder/number the channels list in excel and re-import, or will that break the talkgroup relationship? Or can you later add to the talkgroup list and reorder? What is the best method to prevent relationship corruption of channels and talkgroups?

Ham Radio 2.0 another way to do it is with windows scaling. In display settings try scaling to 125% or 150% and see how that looks. I know.. i hate windows too lol. Too bad none of the Radio Manufacturers have Mac or Linux versions of the programing software. While there is Chirp for Linux, cable drivers for Linux are a mess. They all do digital - digital doesn't have anything to do with Part 90 or 97. You would want the Part 90 version to do GMRS.

Well... I just watched 5 minutes of your video and I gave up. I don't know what the blazes your talking about. This is one of the "problems" Amateur radio is experiencing these days. When I need a $2000 laptop just to program a $30 to $400 radio, along all the ancillary cables, programs and whatever else will be needed, I have to ask is it worth it? I recently moved after retirement, found and went to a meeting of a large and established radio club... I was totally ignored. Nobody greeted me, talked to me... Nothing. They did introductions, I gave my name, call, explained I had just moved there. They had a presentation and then a break. Nobody said anything to me. Totally ignored. Went to a meeting of a different club. Little better but not much. I joined. Went to field day. Most members huddled around their rigs, did their own "thing". Nobody had thought of coffee! I went home, got my "coffee kit", set it up, many drank, three people introduced themselves. Tried to interact, ask questions, asked for advice... Crickets. Checked into the club VHF net many times, then everyone would go to the "440" repeater which I could not hit because of a big hill behind my property. Quit checking in, quit going to meetings. Anyone care? Anyone call me? Anyone email me? Nadda. I'm a retired Civil Service and retired Army officer aviator, instructor pilot in both airplanes and helicopters, many years in the CAP as a SAR pilot, "Commander" and, of all things a "communicator" so I'm not "shy" about picking up a microphone. So I'll go "lone wolf" Studying for my general... David KM4ZYH. (go ahead and check) 73s

It sounds like your issue is with local hams and clubs in your area. Sadly, this is not uncommon, but it is also not the norm. QRZ and eHam forums are a good idea, like was already mentioned. Questions here or in my Discord server are welcome too.

Mike Klemens My father was a Navy radioman on a PBY Catalina in WW2. Later her he owned a Television repair shop and after that he worked for the USAF as a Aircraft Avionics Technician. My older brother was a Amateur. My grandfather had a neighbor who was a Amateur, hand built all his gear. When I was 12, I hand built a FM transmitter for a JrHi science project. Dad found a old CB and taught me the basic elements of how to build a station, antennas, coax, soldering. He bought a Johnson Messenger 100 (7 crystal control channels) for the car. I still have a Lafayette HE20C and D104 microphone I bought by saving pennies. I was studying code in the early 90s, got up to 12 wpm but "life events" interfered. I knew about radio theory so one less thing I had to learn in flight school. When I was heavily involved in CAP I used HF and VHF amateur radios modified for CAP frequencies. My brother in law was Bob Monk WA4GIU, now a silent key. He gave me his Heathkit HX1681, HR 1680 and HM102 SWR meter (he built) before he passed. He was my first "contact" after I got my license. I currently have a Yaesu FTM3207D an ICOM IC2730A and Midland GMRS Mobiles (not the .5 watt toys, because there is no way the YL is going to get her license!). I am 69 now, retired 10 years ago (no health problems, physically fit, I'm a USDA-USFS certified "Sawyer" (chain saw and crosscut) and member of a club that maintains a part of the Appalachian Trail) and wanted to get involved in the public service area of Amateur radio. I took all the FEMA courses on line. Although I am very disappointed with the way the "community" has evolved, I will stick it out and perhaps find some comradery.

Sounds like you have a lot of radio in your blood and brain. I was lucky to have a ham next door and another 5 houses away. Spent a lot on him gear as a kid and had to sell it all to finish high school and go to college. Picked it up 34 years later. Wish I had never left. In short not every club is a match, find another or move to emcomm or HF or satellites. Ham is bigger than a single ham can do in life. It is a bit easier to find other hams with similar interests and also unique interests to find new things to do. I only have a few years as an active ham and looking forward to the next 50......
