Thanks for the nice feature set review Dave. I am a new HAM, just over a month now and purchased this exact unit as my first real rig from Bridgecom about a month ago as well. Really have been enjoying the performance and features and DMR is a really great area to grow into as well. Interested to see how things progress with your unit and if I can pickup some tricks from an experienced Amateur operator. Thanks for all the great information and videos! -73, KC1MTT

I bought the AnyTone AT-778UV when it first came out. The feature list is impressive just like with this radio. After a few days I realize it is really quirky to operate. Just little things like if you're scanning and shut it off when you power it back on it won't start scanning where it left off. I know that's pretty petty but all my other big 3 mobiles do and that's nice. There are just several quirks to where I would probably pass on the Anytone brand again. It's been retired to my Chinese junk pile (enough said) But like I always say your mileage will vary.

I think the multiple DMR IDs is useful if you have multiple hams using the same station or vehicle. For instance, if my son gets licensed and wants to use my radio, or if I put it in the truck and my dad needs to borrow it. Just my two cents. Fantastic video, excellent review! I always watch your videos when making radio purchasing decisions.

APRS was designed to, and can do, so much more than tracking. Bob Bruninga is likely to throw a lightning bolt at your shack for perpetuating that stereotype that APRS is just a tracker, even if that's been the most common use of it.

Bridgecom's selection of videos are much more extensive of a list than when Dave made this video. I found so many videos they made about setting up this radio for Analog, Firmware upgrade, and Codeplug creation. Loaded my own Codeplug and continue to add to it. Currently, looking for videos about properly setting up the radio for Brandmeister network

Best to use the Anytone PC application to control this radio if using as a Basestation radio at home

Dave, at 29:50 you recommend using CTCSS on both Tx and Rx for simplex to eliminate other QSOs opening your squelch. A problem with this technique is that it can produce a lot of radio interference (QRM) because it will hide the fact that the frequency may already be in use. If you are going to do this, both you and your QSO partner have to have the discipline to open your squelch and monitor the frequency for traffic before starting a comm.

I'd have preferred that myself. I was weighing options between Yaesu, Icom and Kenwood (my HT is Yaesu FT3D) but the tri-band option won me over: there are a number of 1.25m repeaters here in the SF Bay Area. DMR predominates over Fusion here, but having both options while on the road is nice. Also, I'll be using the FT3D for satellites. 73, KN6NPZ

It is my understanding that you can have blue tooth or recording. They both use the same card slot in the radio. It is a bit complex but I have gotten sms working. It be nice if they made it easier to enter and send text.

Are there any full power 1.25m radios as part of a triband radio? It seems the triband radios I’ve seen have HT power/5 watts on 1.25m. I’m hoping I’m just missing the full power triband/multiband mobile and base station radios.

Dave we have a lot of repeater activity in most of California. Also there are several in Nevada too. just want to let you know....

Forgive me if I'm mistaken but, this radio does not comply with ID requirements, like most cross-band repeat radios the big dogs make, with an ID,(morse ID) every ten minutes.

I have noticed that at least the 220mhz doesn’t “hear” as well as the Alinco or Jetstream radios.

Nice overview - of the radio and DMR - much better than those flashy youngster youtubers. I just picked one of these up - going full speed into the hobby, again. Good advice on the speeding and APRS - I used to think that was funny to do.... I like how you guys never mention the, eh, AES... a premier feature, if you ask me.............

Dave, where in the world can an old ham like me from the 70s get the basic/starting education on DMR. I even bought a DMR and sent it back when I could not figure it out. I did find in my area that is one DMR repeater. So, how can I start to learn from page 1? KH6JMK

Bridgecom offers a free "college" and live customer support if you buy a DMR radio from them. The AT-D868UV and AT-D878UV are both reasonably priced DMR HTs they offer in the $150-$200 price range.
@StanCook4 жыл бұрын
@@johnmorse3468 Supper disappointed with Bridge System . com. That is the radio I sent back. The "college" is a farce. They whiz through a lot of stuff showing you things do they don't take one minute to show how to do things. Customer support was lacking. They just point to the "$92" collage they give out. I was hoping they would be the answer but now. And I am a Mac guy. Amateur radio companies are still back in the 70s. They think Windows is the only thing going. I asked them how I can computer program the radio if I don't have a Windows machine. You know what they said? Wait for it. GO BUY A WINDOWS MACHINE! Really that was their answer. I know Dave won't read this but it is true and I ordered that radio on his recommendation. Obviously, they are going to treat him better than us.

Nice video! Could you show how APRS is set up (complicated screen options n CPS) and perhaps how SMS texting might be done?

This might be available in the UK as DAB occupies 174-240MHZ so 1.25 is a no go.

I have always wanted to know how can a person call radio to radio simplex using digital. I don't think it can be done with DMR where you can in either Fusion or D-Star. Also how do you make a private call with DMR?

Can I operate the radio on a standard FM 2 meter repeater and have it periodically transmit out my location on the APRS frequency? Good job explaining stuff. DMR is not an easy thing to explain in a few minutes. I have a feeling you have to use it a while to figure it out. Thanks for the CHIRP feedback.

Hey Dave. Do you think this unit would run as a repeater on 2 meter band with a good duplexer or does unit only allow cross band?
@davecasler4 жыл бұрын
I think it does crossband but can’t swear by it. It is not designed for repeating on the same band.

I thought Anytone could have made the screen and text much bigger. Maybe in their next radio. Like you said, the 878 clone only mobile and more power. I have the 878 plus so with a microphone, BT PTT button and an external antenna the only difference is power and if you have a HotSpot in your car who cares. BTW Thumbs Up!

5 watts on 220... :( pass This would have been the perfect mobile radio if it did 25+ on 220. It would then hit ALL Local repeaters and have DMR. I would struggle to get to 220 ones with only 5 watts. For me that does not justify the price. Lots of good dual band options out there for less $. Any who - warning to all. If you are gonna buy this - dont get caught up on the TRI Band jazz unless you live under the 220 tower.
