Meet Shadi and Michelle from Hana Hou, skilled weavers from Hilo, Hawaiʻi. @HanaHouHilo specializes in creating handcrafted Hawaiian and Oceania art pieces and accessories. Preserving the craft of traditional lauhala weaving is an important part of their mission, as lauhala weaving has been around Hawaiian families for thousands of years.
In ancient Hawaiʻi, every family had weavers who turned dried hala leaves into table and floor mats, baskets, pillows, fans, clothing, and more. In fact, you couldn’t move into a home without a lauhala floor mat!
In Hawaiian, “hana hou!” means “one more time!” or "Encore!" Today, they show us how to make a lauhala bracelet from scratch. Learn how they prepare the ʻapolima for weaving, the basic tools you will need, tips and tricks of the trade, and get an inside look at their shop. We hope it will leave you saying, "hana hou!"
