Im helping my son with math homework. In example 1, you dont simplify -8 over 3. In example 3, you simplify and then find a common denominator. How do I know when to simplify and when not to. I was horrible at math and just got good at guessing.

Hi Amy. I did get a common denominator in example 1, which was 6. Then I added the fractions together and changed my improper fraction to a mixed number in my last step.
