Күн бұрын

This week on The Horti-Culturalists a very special episode as April 25th is ANZAC day - the Australian equivalent to Veterans Day in the US or Remembrance Day in the UK - and we were lucky enough to be invited to the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne to visit the exquisite gardens there and meet landscape designer Michael Wright who created them. So we'll take a look at the four courtyards of the Shrine and the surrounding gardens, the plants used to create them, all of which serve to honour the service and sacrifice of Victorians and Australians in war, peacemaking and peacekeeping.
If you want to plan a visit to the Shrine of Remembrance you can visit the website here: www.shrine.org...
Many thanks to landscape designer Michael Wright for taking us through the Shrine's gardens and you can visit his website here: www.rushwright...
And many thanks to the team at the Shrine of Remembrance for allowing us to film in this important national memorial.
Some of the plants we mention in this video are:
Chamaerops humilis
Quercus robur 'Fastigiata'
Eryngium pandanifolium
Ficus rubiginosa
Dendrocalamus minor var. amoenus - Ghost Bamboo
Strelitzia nicolai
Ceiba speciosa
Cussonia paniculata
Monstera deliciosa
Euphorbia 'Lipstick' pink
Opuntia
Melianthus
Ficus elastica 'Burgundy'
Agathis robusta
Ceratonia siliqua - Carob Tree
Quercus cerris - Turkey Oak
Ruscus
Salvia rosmarinus - Rosemary
Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus'

Lest we forget. The Gallipoli campaign with its many ANZAC losses is particularly remembered here in the uk 😔 🙏 Thank you for sight of this important shrine. Such interesting thinking behind planting that's relevant and attractive to look at. The ten metre wide poppy art installation is worthy of the site and a beautiful piece. Thank you. We also have trams here in Nottingham UK 😉

You aren’t the first to point out that other places have trams, and they are fabulous. We are just more famous for them than some cities. Regards Stephen

@thehorti-culturalists The tram comment was an aside and maybe inappropriate of me given the importance of the Shrine of Remembrance.

Most of the cost of building the Shrine was raised by public contributions, including from children.

I have questions for Stephen. 1. How difficult is it to transplant a ginkgo tree? We have a 3.5 to 4 metres tall tree growing too close to a Nyssa and wish to move it to allow the Ginkgo and the Nyssa more room to grow. We are situated high on Mount Macedon, Victoria. Cheers Patrick and Carol 2. Is it possible to tell if a plant has been grown from a cutting or a seed? We have a cut-leaf walnut growing in our garden, which was acquired by the previous owner from Duneira, Mount Macedon. Cheers, Patrick and Carol.

Given the man power a large Gingko can be moved but the best way is to trench around it and cut the roots one year and lift it the next.Grafted plants can usually be identified by a ring of unmatched bark but it isn’t usually possible to differentiate between seedlings and cuttings. Regards Stephen
