This clip honours our soldiers who fought in all the wars, including the current ones, but it pays special tribute to the British and Australian soldiers who died whilst in Borneo as POW's (Prisoners of War). To find out more detail of the "Death Marches" that occurred during WW2 when the POW's were forced to march between Sandakan and Ranau by the Japanese was heart breaking and I wanted to put together a clip to hopefully educate people a bit more. We have over the years learned more about the Western Front during WW1 and about the Kakoda Track and also Vietnam but little is spoken of about the British & Australian soldiers in the Borneo POW camps and the conditions and torture they were subjected to. Only 6 POW's survived, and that is because they escaped. This is my tribute to them and their comrades who died such cruel deaths.
We were on a holiday tour and enjoying our stay in the rain forest at Bilit (Borneo) on ANZAC day so our small group of Aussie holiday makers had our own dawn service on the banks of the river Kinabatangan before we set off on a small river cruise. A couple of days later we visited the War Memorial gardens in Sandakan where the POW camp was, and a lot of the photos (about 2:20 into the clip are from that memorial garden. The others are from the gardens in Ranau where the prisoners (who initially survived the marches) were taken - before they were forced to march some more. It is a story that should be learned and our respects paid to them in the same way we do for the Western Front of WW1
