Part 4 of 5 -- "Fields of Fire":
Following the lives of a dozen Australian soldiers who served in the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) during World War I -- The expertly crafted, classic 1980s Mini-Series follows them from the 1915 battle of Gallipoli, to the brutal trenches of France during the 1916 Somme battles, the 1917 Arias and Vimy Ridge battles to the final 1918 German offensives and the final victory drive as well as the hardships, mid-adventures and the casualties of friends encountered by each one.
Produced after the success of "Gallipoli" (1981), and precedes "The Lighthorsemen" (1987). Recurring themes include the Australian identity, such as mateship and larrikinism, the loss of innocence in war, and also the continued coming of age of the Australian nation and its soldiers (the ANZAC spirit). Starring Andrew Clarke, Mark Hembrow, Megan Williams, Paul Hogan, Jon Blake and Christopher Cummins.
EPISODE FOUR - Original Air Date of October 30, 1985:
By the winter of 1917, the platoon is now holding the line in the mud around Ypres, and disillusionment has infected much of the Allied army. To make matters worse, word arrives that Russia has surrendered following the Russian Revolution, allowing the German army on the Eastern Front to be sent to France. Barrington and Flanagan are now both officers, with Barrington now assisting Australian General John Monash, and Flanagan finding and killing the deserter Gordon. The massive German Spring Offensive then begins in March 1918, shattering the depleted British 5th Army, and for the first time since 1914, the Western Front breaks open. Barrington, on a forward scouting mission for Monash, takes command of a group of British survivors, helping them dig in to fight the advancing Germans. Flanagan, now commanding the company, is ordered to a defensive position at Hazebrouck where they are instructed to hold off the advancing Germans. They are joined by a handful of surviving Tommies, and Bluey's skill with the Lewis gun is put to good use. Now promoted to Sergeant Major, Harris also displays considerable courage and skill despite his past secrets.

Aussies actually listen to their junior members, it provided flexibility and enabled initiative. When I was in the Aussie navy we (stokers) were taught to push back on orders if it was counterproductive to the mission objective. I myself fought orders from a cpo. I told off the ships xo for getting too ahead of himself. You have subject matter experts and you respect their knowledge base I’m not happy with our current chain of command but I’m still young enough to reenlist. God bless the servicemen that came before myself, I’m not a 1/5 of the man they were

58:18 It was at this point that Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig issued what Australia’s official war correspondent, C.E.W Bean, described as his famous ‘Backs to the Wall’ appeal to British and Commonwealth troops on 11 April 1918. “… Three weeks ago to-day the enemy began his terrific attacks against us on a 50 mile front. His objects are to separate us from the French, to take the Channel ports and destroy the British Army. …There is no other course open to us but to fight it out! Every position must be held to the last man: there must be no retirement. With our backs to the wall, and believing in the justice of our cause each one of us must fight to the end.”
