Whether it's deterrence from kinetic conflict over Taiwan, the race for Artificial Intelligence and supersonics, or the protection of technological supply chains, Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party are the single most capable global competitors. Dmitri Alperovitch joins host Marshall Kosloff to explain the how and why behind America's need to win the coming cold war with China, and how to keep it "cold."

Although this is meant to be a short and brief podcast, I feel obliged to point out two shortfalls: 1. China is not a sitting duck. What does China have? And what does China want? 2. Besides China and the US, the rest of the world are not NPCs. What do they want? And what can they get from the "Cold War II"?

While considering how much damage sanctions can do to China, is it not necessary to consider the extent of U.S. dependence on Chinese industrial goods and the losses that the U.S. faces if trade is disrupted?

This is economy, stupid! No war can carry on without economy. When an innocent little girl pointed out: the king is walking without clothes, all the magnificent facade is gong to collapse, sooner or later.

Hi Marshall, Love your pod. You're the best. I'm wondering if we'd all be better off if we never invested in China. My family works in finance. 12 years ago I asked my brother in law why he was investing in a genocidal regime who puts our blood (my daughter is in the Army) in harm's way. He said, "12% baby." Is it possible to get a guest who can speak to the damage done by the massive amount of FDI which went to China, and which we're now having to improve our own military to potentially to combat. It's as if we created our own problem by the greediness of our own financial sector.

To beat or deter China, the best thing the US could do now is postpone all postponable spending on the Army (and maybe also on ICBM modernization) and for now divert those funds to the Navy, Marines and Air Force so they can buy more anti-ship missiles and accelerate development of the B-21, the rapid dragon program, and attritable Navy-Marine tanker drones (currently in testing) that can launch rocket-style off the back of small trucks deployed to remote Pacific islands where they frequently change position popping up anywhere 4x4 trucks can go. Such unmanned tankers will allow US fighters and bombers to fuel up much closer to the combat zone than a big manned KC-135 tanker ever could. If possible, it may also make sense to postpone spending on the next carrier or two and divert those funds to buy more attack subs. To buy more subs, the US would likely have to build a new shipyard. It may also be necessary -- and in any event desirable -- to create a free vocational school that only teaches shipbuilding skills. Nowadays it's the sub not the carrier that is the ocean's true apex predator. Arguably, super carriers are less about maximizing the Navy's overall lethality and more about showing the flag and glorifying the Navy, its admirals and its aviators. (On this claim, see military strategist Edward Luttwak.) Although today's super carriers are hard to hit -- and much harder to sink than most people think -- a single missile strike on a carrier flight deck can easily incapacitate the carrier for weeks or months. Moreover, due to the tremendous cost of carriers and the thousands of lives onboard, they may be considered too precious to use within strike range of the Taiwan strait. Furthermore, for the cost of one super carrier, the US could buy three or four Virginia class attack subs, which are likely to sink more Chinese ships at lower risk and cost to the US than one more super carrier. These three or four additional subs are also more likely to deter China because the CCP knows that the US is more likely to risk losing a few subs and the few hundred submariners onboard them than a super carrier and the five or six thousand sailors and aviators it carries. Lastly, the US lead over China in sub technology is larger than the US lead over China in any other military technology. Thus more US subs plays more to US strength.

This guy still doesn't get that China is playing a different game. He's an archetypical American who gets China wrong at every turn, with his cold war mentality, expecting we win they lose. China is playing a multipolar world game. When the US wakes up one day, they will realize they can no longer compete in the rest of the world. Their military might around the world is useless , unless there are wars. The US has nothing (except for IT technology) to offer to the rest of the world in the peace time. That's why the US wages wars all around the world. They should really think about their peace time strategy instead of making China the number one enemy. While China avoids the narrative of the cold war, the US rejects the narrative of the multipolar world. The question is not who is right. The question is who will benefit more.

Well said! While USA is spending 900 Billion on military, China is trading with all countries around the world, build road and rail, schools and hospitals. For most nations around the world, which side do they want to pick? As on the military side, regardless how much USA is going to spend, it can't win the war with China. USA does not have the industrial base to fight a large scale war, while China manufacturing capability is bigger than all western countries put together. Let USA keep spending on military, that is how empire declines.

well said.
