I think the main change for the "farmer boys" was that their siege attack speed was raised to 3 from 1.5. They did raise one stat slightly to offset this but it makes the age 2 hoe rush mostly untenable.

Can they take the towers just by walking to them? I usually build a tc and a fort between the middle two

If you kill all the units it becomes yours. Your opponent can claim it if you leave it unguarded.
