These Sessions will be recorded in history as some of the best music of our era. This is like candy to me. I will watch every single video that is posted.

What a spiritual ride with crisp and clean notes of Aoife O’Donovan’s vocals and Mary Chapin Carpenter’s harmonies. I could ride it forever.

If this doesn't move you, you are dead. It may even bring some back to life. So beautiful.

The song is called "Hallowell". It's a shape note song composed by Stephen Spitzer and it's #88 in the Northern Harmony book. He also wrote "St Gaudens", another stunningly beautiful shape note song. "I thought when someone died The spirit flew over furthest field. Now I see death will leave behind (a scrap of light, a broken smile) The remnants by which I might be healed."

I was at this gig and still remember the hairs on the back of my neck standing up when this was sung. I'm sure Steven Spitzer would be more than happy with this interpretation which introduced the song to a new audience. Some things are more important than money.

you are spot on in your comment it does not matter how the song is exposed...once it is played.. and goes on to have a life off its own..

HALLOWELL I thought when someone died the spirit flew over furthest field Now I see death will leave behind (a scrap of light, a broken smile) the remnants by which I might be healed. REFRAIN The dead lift me up, In brightest sky, the clouds below me race; The Dead lift me up- I see them face to face. Held high by these strong hands breathing the wind I am born again. The mountain flowers, the desert sands surround me now, comfort me now, In death or dreaming I find my kin. REFRAIN Our voices shake in song for memories we have long endured. Though this begins to make us strong (the combing through of shreds of love) It is through living that we are cured. REFRAIN The dead lift me up, In brightest sky, the clouds below me race; The Dead lift me up- I see them face to face.

From Stephen Spitzer, the composer of "Hallowell": Just wanted to clarify that I wrote this song for two different women in my life: One was Miriam Bergman - one of my best friends in college who had just completed all of her 12 years of college and medical schooling. She was in the process of moving from Hallowell, Maine to join a family practice when she was stung by a bee and died. She remains an amazing inspiration for me - a Northern Star to sail my boat by. The other woman was my soccer playing pal, Stephanie, whose father was brutally and randomly murdered when she was a teenager. His death was not a guiding light for her but a tornado that shredded her household. I always prayed for her that she would find a way of holding his death with greater peace and liberation. This music is both painful and comforting. Does anyone know who the composer and lyricist is/are, and the background/context for this composition? It seems to be attributed here and in some posts to Steven Spitzer. But I haven't found much context online. Thank you.
