These videos are seriously a life saver. I also really appreciate you including some context pertaining to Christianity and Jesus Christ before delving into the artwork. As someone who subscribes to the Jewish faith, I often find myself completely lost when it comes to classroom discussions regarding Christianity, as most teachers assume their students are already well-versed on the subject and don't bother giving any background knowledge. Keep it up!

You have it totally backwards. Latin was the street language of the city of Rome and the Western Roman empire --- Greek was the fancy language used by aristocrats.

Greek was spoken by all classes in what's now Greece and Turkey (the eastern Roman empire), but nowhere near Rome itself. Romans spoke Latin on the street, but Greek (if they were elite) as a second language to be fancy. Kind of like how French used to be the main global language 80 years ago and upper-class people throughout the world learned it and used it to impress.

Goodly Dragon, This was not true during late antiquity. The aristocracy of the Western empire favored Greek as the language of the educated during the Roman * classical * period but as we get to the late empire and we reach the point where the West and East are divided, this was no longer the case. By that point even the highest classes were speaking Latin again and while some had a reading knowledge of Greek, most did not because Latin had accumulated a rich literary tradition of its own and Greek was unnecessary to the achievement of sophistication. The Eastern empire's elites also became less and less bilingual as the centuries wore on and no longer spoke Latin as a second language.

@@EyeLean5280 I think his point was more that in the Late Western Roman Empire, Latin was the language on the streets. The video got this part wrong and said Greek was "more common and widespread." I imagine the reason Greek was used in the catacombs is because Christianity first came from the Greek speaking parts of the empire and the first Christian texts were written in Greek.

I'm struck by the choice to include the image of Jesus holding a dinosaur. Are you a creationist? Or are you mocking Christianity as a whole for including some creationists? Honestly, as a fellow teacher of college-level art history, I'm dumbfounded by this incredible lapse in respect/judgment on the part of an "educator." Certainly this image has no place in a presentation like this based on artistic merit.

sometimes a picture of jesus holding a dinosaur is just a picture of jesus holding a dinosaur. it's not that deep.
