Bromothymol Blue is used as an indicator. If placed in a acidic solution it will turn the solution yellow, and if placed in a basic solution it will turn the solution blue. The equivalence point is seen when the solution turns green. pH is important for a variety of reasons. For example if you are trying to discard an acidic solution, you could add bromothymol blue to the solution and then titrate in some base until the solution turned green. This indicates that it is neutral

Why is ph levels important and is bromothymol just for checking ph levels thnx

Here's a suggestion: Use a burette on a stand to show an actual titration. It's also possible that overshooting the end point may be avoided this way.

I have a question: If you add CO2 (carbon dioxide) to a glass with blue water (water + bromothymol blue), the water turns green (and eventually yellow). my question is, what would happen if you removed the Carbon dioxide from the bottle? would it turn blue again? or a completely different color?

Bromothymol blue is an indicator that turns yellow-green in the presence of acid substances. When carbon dioxide is breathed into water it reacts with the water to form carbonic acid. Carbonic acid itself is in equilibrium with water and carbon dioxide. As more and more carbonic acid is produced, the pH of the solution decreases causing the indicator to change color to yellow-green. The color change of the indicator thus serves to demonstrate the presence of carbon dioxide by showing the change in pH. The CO2 introduced into water makes a slightly acidic carbonic acid, which causes the solution to turn from blue to yellow-green. SInce you have created carbonic acid, the solution will not return back to its neutral state (which is actually green) unless a base is added to do this. Removing the CO2 will not remove the carbonic acid that was created. Remember Bromothymol blue is green in its neutral state (pH 7) and blue around pH 8. Sodium hydroxide can be added to the solution to make it truly blue if necessary.
