I have a question. (x+1)/x^2 has a horizontal asymptote at y=0 and a zero at x=-1. How is this possible. Shouldn't y=0 not be possible or is it not a rational function.

This is a common misunderstanding about asymptotes. While it's true that the graph will not cross a VERTICAL asymptote, that's not true about horizontal asymptotes. Horizontal asymptotes help us know what the end behavior of the graph is doing, and helps us know the graph is getting closer and closer to that imaginary line as the x-values approach infinity (or negative infinity). It's OK for the graph to cross a horizontal asymptote.
