I have owned multiple Royal Oaks including the chronograph and the perpetual calendar which was my daily wear for years. I have nothing negative to say regarding the Royal Oak. A few observations though: The finish on the Royal Oak is so exacting it is an absolute scratch magnet. On a Rolex, scratches give it character. On a Royal Oak it gives pain. The bezel dings fairly easily and the bracelet is a scratch magnet. Refinishing is a nerve-racking process. One can only refinish the bezel a few times before it loses the continuity. I have worn my 4500 V now for two years. I frequently wear it off the bracelet and on the rubber. I have the blue rubber as well as the black and the brown, as well as the blue crocodile strap. The ability to switch makes this a potentially single watch collection for all occasions. The water resistance and antimagnetic characters of the VC are far superior than the Royal Oak. The VC water resistance exceeds the Rolex standard oyster perpetual. For me, the choice is easy. The VC overseas is a much better day today watch which has the ability to be used as a sports watch. I know, because that’s the way I use it. There are circumstances in which I don’t feel like potentially beating up my $20,000 watch and for that I have a tutor Pelagos in titanium. But the VC overseas almost never comes off my wrist. It does not seem to stop from the same scratch magnet issues that I had with my Royal Oaks. Furthermore, because I can place it on the rubber, and frequently do, and even further helps to preserve the fine finish of the bracelet. I have spent silly amounts of money on watches over my lifetime. Through that, I am drawn certain conclusions to work for me. I don’t need an excess of complications (and I have tried almost all of them) I want a high horology watch on a bracelet (live in a humid climate) that I can wear every day. AP is a sporty watch. The Overseas is a sports watch that you can easily wear on elegant rubber or alligator. And looks like it belongs there in any variation. Aesthetic’s are debatable and while I very much like the Royal Oak, the VC has a less aggressive posture and I believe is more flexible for multiple uses. The clear winner for me is the overseas. The Vacheron Overseas IMO is much more appealing. The Maltese Cross tied to the dial, bezel, band and clasp are fantastic. The esthetic simplicity of this watch is very attractive. The versatility of being able to change bands instantly expands the watch wear-ability. One last point, the price of the Vacheron is approximately 1/2 of the AP yet we are comparing them as equals. So what would justify this crazy price differential? Nothing....quality, beauty, versatility and a better price point make the VC a winner all day.
@audemarspiguet27224 жыл бұрын
At current market prices, VC Overseas wins all day. However, it’s definitely not half the price of a 41mm Royal Oak. Current market price for blue dial Overseas is USD 18-19k on average. It’s still great value compared to the hyped up Nautilus, Aquanaut and Royal Oak

The blue Overseas wins for me, any day. Why? It's simply more beautiful visually. The blue dial is absolutely stunning, and certainly more striking than the AP, especially in different lighting conditions, going from a navy blue to electric turquoise blue. I find the shape more interesting, too, especially the bezel. Your two complaints about the VC (non-hacking seconds and gradual date change) seem insignificant. First, hacking on a mechanical watch is way over-rated. The best mechanicals in the world lose/gain a second or two a day, so hacking precision is lost virtually immediately. The function of a date change is way, way down on my list of important features. It's virtually all about looks, fit and finish, and the VC is superior, IMHO. Great review and debate! Love the videos.

Excellent comment. I can relate 100% as I have the exact same combination RO VC and Tudor 😁. Overseas is simply a better day to day watch with all the arguments you mentioned. I personally never seen anybody wear an overseas. I consider the AP the rich man’s watch, but there is a lot of people (not everyone) who wear AP that can’t have a conversation about watches they just buy it for the hype, whereas if I see somebody wearing A VC he is probably the most interesting guy in the room and he knows a thing or two about watches and can talk for hours, not just following the hype train.

Big props for such a good comparison video! Reminded me of this one done by WatchBox Studios: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKCoZpiiftp5qs0 I was also pulling my hair out between these 2 at one point, it was a really tough choice. I love the VC movement and bracelet, and the fact that it comes with rubber and leather strap which is interchangeable with the steel bracelet was really good value in my opinion - you basically get "3 watches" for the price of 1. It was really nitpicking at the smallest things between these 2, but the fact that VCO doesn't have hacking seconds, and that date window not being in the same color just took a little bit of shine away from it being the "perfect" watch. I eventually still went for the RO 15400, mainly because RO is just a much more iconic and timeless design. The vain part of me also feels that the RO simply has more "street cred" and immediate recognition even from people who may not know that much about watches :) VCO ticks the box for more features, but RO ticks the most important box - it spoke to my heart.

I went with the blue dial VC, no question. As nice as the Royal Oak is, the location of the date kills it for me. Having the date window not located on the outside of the dial instantly tells me the size of the movement is not sufficient to 'fill' the case. In other words, the movement was not made for that case size but it was used anyway. At this level, I'm not a big fan of cutting corners like this.

Looks wise i like the VC more (not a Genta fan and dont understand the hype having designed one/and maybe two good designs while having "meh" with the rest ) . In the sport watch segment robust movement is a must . Both AP and VC with their earlier iterations were delicate and would see serving often (not sure about APs new movement and VCs third gen though) . The no hacking of the VC is not a problem as most people really dont really adjust to the second .......... especially that they lose seconds per day/week anyway ( there is also a hack with the no hacking but VC said by doing this hack will not harm the movement , but best to leave it as is). AP looks like it has better finishing than the VC (but i think this is more because of the natural design of the watch ), and i agree with the more uniformed brushing in the AP. The water resistance is also a must and at least having 100m which also reflects on long term water resistance . In all i have future plans with the VC but its movement durability (including the AP, and PP Nautilus ) makes me hesitate. In the end of the day with the price of these watches they personally have to be almost perfect with all aspects of a sport watch. Great vid and insight.

Excellent video! Do GP Laureato vs VC Overseas next please. Your last sentence suggests that you might recommend the Laureato in that comparison, so curious to see upon a close inspection. Between these two, I agree the Royal Oak seems the better choice in a vacuum unless you want to have strap choices in your watches. I think the VC Overseas makes a better “one watch” collection with its better water resistance and strap changes.

@jaceprovo4 жыл бұрын
To correct a couple of things, the overseas does not cost half the price of a Royal Oak. Their retail price points are actually very similar. At the moment, there is a craze for certain steel luxury watches and their resale price can be ridiculous. AP is been milking the Royal Oak long time. It is 80% of their watch production. I can’t say that I blame them. Those of us who have been collecting for a long time see there are an unlimited number of limited editions of the Royal Oak. It’s almost like Rolex and red print on the dial. Write submariner in Red and the watch triples in value to collectors. I disagree with the idea that the overseas is delicate. It is shock resistant, highly water resistant and highly anti-magnetic and built in the steel case. It is truly a sports watch. The Nautilis, which is a watch that I dislike aesthetically even when you could purchase them for 20% below retail, is a sports watch. The Royal Oak is a sporty watch. Where do you want to beat the hell out of one of these Trinity watchers at their price point is of course a totally different discussion. I know somebody who has a PP perpetual calendar chronograph that he wears in the pool. Even I think that’s nuts. But I have no problem going in the pool shower or ocean with the VC. It’s built for that.

Regarding the VC Overseas: A missing stop-second and a crawling date is an absolute no-go for a watch with the "Poinçon de Genève" and a price of almost 20,000 euros. Regarding the AP Royal Oak: The 15202 as a sports watch is not water resistant over 50 meters. In 2020 it should be technically possible to resolve such a weak spot. By the way: Never understood why the 15300, 15400 and 15500 were released by AP when there is still the sensational 15202. In principle, these are all 15202s with larger case sizes, worse proportions and boring movements. Instead they should produce more 15202. Just my 2 cents.
@jaceprovo4 жыл бұрын
Oliver Wiegand my royal Oak perpetual was only 30 m. Historically, the 39 mm watch was called the jumbo because it was extremely large for the time. The perpetual is the same size as the jumbo and it’s perfect for my wrist but it is considered somewhat small by today’s standards. Furthermore the 2120 movement is really more of a dress watch movement and less of a sports movement. The jumbo is sporty looking but not a sports watch. I absolutely love the jumbo. If they weren’t so ridiculously overpriced at the moment I would be wearing one but I refuse to pay that kind of premium.
@jaceprovo4 жыл бұрын
My AP RO perpetual didn’t have a second hand at all. Never bothered me. I would like a hacking second but not a deal breaker. The quickest date is nice but really ultimately useless. Do you sit around at midnight looking for a date change? There is no perfect watch. Believe me I’ve tried for decades.
@jb65874 жыл бұрын
The date switches quick enough not to be a problem at all. And, far more important than stop second is a precise movement. My Overseas is very precise so that is all I worry about. Regarding AP that is the reason why they produce two models. 15202 is more for purists, almost a dress watch actually and the 15500 is the sportier version with a more robust movement, bigger size. The movement of the 15500 is far from boring. On the contrary, it’s a superb and modern movement

Seriously high horology is so much more than the holy Trinity. Breguet, Antoine Preziuso, Blancpain, FP Journe,Girard Perregaux, Piaget or Jaeger LeCoultre to name but a few. The holy Trinity each provide a couple safe bets and not much beyond that. I suspect most owners of a time piece from the HT barely understand the fundamentals of the mechanical watch on their wrist. Anybody can be a connoisseur of aesthetic’s but who knows how the dials are fashioned and what is the practical benefit of bevelling on the watch’s movement a.k.a. anglagè? Owning and being knowledgeable do not bear the same fruits.

I think the 3rd generation Overseas, just lacks something. 2nd generation was a much better looking watch and more in keeping with the 1st generation. I believe the problem is the bezel, it just doesn't jump out the way it should, after all it is its main feature. The bezel on the Oak screams out from across the room, and you know instantly its a Royal Oak. You would have to look pretty close to know you were looking at an Overseas. The 2nd gen had that instant recognition from across the room. I would suggest that if you took the same models from 2015, it might be a much harder decision. Ive got a good idea, buy a preowned duel time overseas, and with the money you save, you can buy a Rolex Submariner

Great review with some very valid points. I forgive everything but not that horrendous VC date font. I would appreciate a similar video comparing Rolex to Zenith to shutter the illusion that Rolex is "the best" of the mid tier watches.

First of all thank you for another outstanding video! For me personally the AP Royal Oak ticks more boxes, mostly because of its iconic look and the high-end bracelet. Be safe and please continue to provide us with more of your excellent content!

Thanks so much my friend. Royal Oak are amazing pieces. Call me crazy, but I simply can’t seem to fall for anything else now. 🤯

Tried them both on, and almost pulled the trigger on the VC (black dial). Both excellent, but VC for me. Just ...

Another great video. Have you thought about doing videos on other brands such as IWC, Ulysse Nardin, etc? In my collection, I have the IWC Portuguese 7 day automatic and also a UN limited edition dual time gmt. Both are really beautiful watches. Also, as mentioned in a previous video, would love to see a comparison between the DJ41 and AP Royal Oak.

Underdog thanks so much for the feedback. I’ll definitely be getting into IWC very soon. UN are a tad harder Watches to comeby but I sure will try to find one for the review :) DJ41 vs Royal Oak - I thought about it but given the huge price difference, I couldn’t quite decide if it’s a viable comparison. Maybe I can do skydweller vs Royal Oak?
@underdog50814 жыл бұрын
Hafiz J Mehmood granted there is a huge price difference, I wonder if such a huge price difference is justified (I know, call me crazy). Yeah, UN is not very common and some of the designs are out there, but I have the limited edition dual time GMT with the blue dial. Really an underrated watch that gets a lot of attention with my watch buddies.

From all I know from the watches I have reviewed, AP are very well worth the price difference for sure. I did show some of this in my Sub vs Royal Oak video. In a nut shell, Rolex are very basic watches in terms of finish and overall feel, and AP are another level in terms of craftsmanship. Do check this video pls. It’s a bit old and my lighting and gear wasn’t as good as its now but it does the job I hope :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIicc4Kritupoqc

Awesome comparison. I do think that both watches have their positives and negatives, or at least in my eye. I do prefer the Royal Oak more than the Overseas overall, but I don't like the bling and shine of the Royal Oak bracelet and case. I don't know why, but VC does little to nothing, and that movement with the stop-seconds, and slow date movement is just unacceptable in my opinion.

I’m probably the same. Found VC a bit underwhelming.

@@HafizJMehmood and they are asking too much for it as well. Did you hear that they are raising their prices 20% by middle of the year?

Great video and content as always Hafiz! Many thanks! Both watches are great and the AP has more history behind it. Yet it is hard to find from an AD and it looks more industrial and somewhat dated. The VC looks more of a gentleman’s watch as it is more refined especially in relation to the bracelet. I have not tried either on my wrist and my views might change but I think the VC does it more for me.
@HafizJMehmood4 жыл бұрын
VC is a beautiful watch indeed. It’s a bit more subtle too due to soft and rounded corners. Royal Oak has sharp and bold profiles. It’s gritty and agressive in overall profiles and looks. Pls do try them on both before you proceed with any. Watches on the wrist many times look differently than they do on the screen or table.

Good video! Great review and I think the GP Laureato is underrated. A comparison video between the AP RO and the GP Laureato (chrono) will make a great review 👍

Oh good detail comparison. Already have the RO. Saving for either Offshore or Overseas. No hacking in Overseas is shocking. Should I stick to AP. Though the Ocerseas versatility is appealing.

Wonderful expose as usual, both wonderful pieces, 1 on 1 R.O.vs. Overseas , they both have equal positives, size & cost , mech./ bracelet, wrist fit, it comes down to the buyer preference . P.S. Tx.

The AP has a lot of sharp edges which attract scratches. The VC wears better, because it is easier to maintain. Look at the AP after a few years, and you will find it is a scratch magnet.

You mention the GP at the end but not the zenith defy skyline which is better than the GP for me. Plus the original was made before royal oak

Man, this is another epic video - the quality is amazing, and your commentary is very insightful and fact-based. Loved it. I totally agree with your final choice and as I own both AP 15202 and Vacheron Overseas Chrono (2 gen), I think of AP as a much higher end product, but VC is probably the best bang for your buck for an everyday luxury watch expirience.
@evgenykorneev69734 жыл бұрын
PS: when you say "Audemars Piguet", the "s" in Audemars and "t" in Piguet are both silent:) Small thing but as I lived in Switzerland for some 6 years, I grew to hear them pronounced correctly and it hurts my ears when folks get to say them incorrectly. Here is a good guide: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYOxlHSIgtFqj6s
@HafizJMehmood4 жыл бұрын
I agree that overseas is overall a good bang for the buck. They’re still going for under retail so you simply can’t go wrong with them. You’re right, I didn’t realise you don’t say “s” in Audemars 😅 Thanks again for the feedback 👍

Hafiz, thank you for pointing out the AR coating. I could not figure out why the AP looks so amazing in my wrist shot photos. But it must be partially due to the AR coating.

Dear sir vc seems to have cross logo related to a certain religion. Your thoughts plz?
@polariz6664 жыл бұрын
It's just coincidence - the original "maltese cross" design inspiration came from a watch part that holds tension in the mainspring. See here: www.watchprosite.com/vacheron-constantin/two-examples-of-maltese-crosses-that-have-no-religious-significance/14.268475.1747899/
