Really good detailed lesson. I've been playing Apache at gigs for about 30 years, but picked up a couple of good tips that work and sound more authentic the way you demonstrated. Anyone that plays a lot of Shadows songs would benefit greatly from buying a Hall & Collins Signature echo pedal, plus a Hank Marvin Easy Mute tremolo arm for a Stratocaster, which is what Hank currently uses. It makes it easier to pick whilst holding the tremolo arm.

An interesting video - great to hear such an in depth analysis of this great tune. Probably worth mentioning that, for anyone looking to get that distinctive "Shadows" echo, there are a number of options available made specifically for the purpose. The "Blue Nebula" pedal is relatively inexpensive, and replicates Binson and Mehazzi echo machines (as well as others). It also comes pre-configured with echo patterns for the majority of the Shadows more popular tunes. Hall & Collins Signature Echo is another, though not currently in production due a parts shortage. If you have deep pockets, there's also the "TVS3" that Hank uses himself 🙂

Great to see all these often neglected guitar instrumental classics finally get the recognition they deserve. For a more modern and left field instrumental , Emergency Contraception Blues by the Bombay bicycle club is worth giving a look, wonderfully racous indie. Cheers!

Really enjoyed these Apache videos! One thing to bear in mind is that in the days when Hank recorded Apache etc light gauge strings weren't available meaning that string bending wasn't really an option, so he used the tremelo bar instead. Also heavy strings contributed to his sound. He's mentioned this several times over the years.

400 ms on the first delay, 115ms on the second, single repeat on both, adjust balance to taste but less volume on the second is more authentic. pedals in series of course.

Very Good! Thank you! It was very informative. Not with you on the diatonic, harmonics, theory stuff, but your instruction on this song is great! It isn't a hard song to play but it does take some equipment, as you have very well pointed out, to get the right sound. I have the Spark modeling amp and still can't get the sound as good as you have it. I think two different delays is key. With the Spark I can get close with one delay and one reverb, but not as close as yours. Unfortunately, the Spark app is limited to only one delay. Thanks again, love it! Surfs up dude! My favorite genre! Gnarly!

Great to see both videos Adrian, been playing and learning guitar less than a year, but feel this is a track I want to try and conquer over the summer. I always find myself coming back to your stuff, it's so well presented. I'm maybe not past the noob stage yet, but with your videos, it gives me inspiration to try harder, great work!, I have Line 6 amp, with effects so may get a bit close maybe to the sound.

I really enjoyed watching and learning from this video - as well as part1. You obviously put a lot of time and effort into explaining some theory and especially the nuances in playing this tune. However, I couldn't help notice that you left out explaining the slide up on the low E string for the 2nd part of the final gallop. So I went back to part one where you ran through the whole song and paid attention :^)

Adrian, a piece of advice if some of your viewers want the multi-delay on a budget is that NuX does 2 affordable Roland Space Echo pedals - the Tape Core and their new Tape Echo pedal. Both have multi-head functions, sound great, and are much cheaper than the offerings from Boss or Strymon. But I totally applaud the approach of trying to use whatever you have lying about first. I'm a heretic and play The Ventures version of this, so I've not had to fuss with it too much.

Yeah, Nokie double picked a whole section thar Hank did with the echo; I originally learned the song from the Vs (Shadows just weren't a thing in the States then), so that's one way I got double picking down. :-)

I have recently been watching The Shadows Final Tour DVD which was filmed in Cardiff in 2004. They are as tight as a duck's a*se and Hank's playing is flawless and his tone is like liquid gold. I didn't recognise the amp he appears to be playing (it isn't a Vox). Of course he is playing his Fiesta Red Strat most of the time but they all switch to Burns for a couple of numbers. I had forgotten just how good they were.

This video was SO informative. Well pleased I found you. Just starting out on guitar. At 75 I've got plenty of catching up to do. Only interested in Shadows tunes, and one of my questions on YT was if I could use 2 delay pedals in series, each tuned to different delay times, which I understand is what Hank used. You've answered this, so many thanks. Still building my Strat-ish and don't own an amp or the pedals yet. All in good time. At least I now know what I need, or rather what I could get away with without breaking the bank.... Many thanks mate. Subscribed... Is there any reverb in there? I've half considered a delay/reverb combo. Wondering if reverb would be needed for Shadows tunes?

They all sounded good to me, but I am just a beginner guitar player, one thing that keeps bugging me when I hear others on KZbin play this song, for some reason it is in my mind when I heard this being played when I was a lot younger it seems to me that there is one part of this song that sounded like someone ran their pick or something up and down the strings to give it a scratchy sound and it seems like it is missing in this, or that I am thinking of a different song maybe played by the Ventures, I think their should be a scratchy sound added to this, it should come right after the horse type bass beat, give it a try.
