Frequent ones in the 229th virtual AHB are Beacon & Torch. Beacon meaning flight is formed on the runway and everyone has their smash off indicating ready to lift. Torch is then called by the lead indicating flight is about to pull pitch. It's our most elegant way of formation take-offs.

Awesome video. Brought back some memories. If I may add some.... "Combat Cocked"...all preflight & before starting engine checks complete. If "scramble" was called, you jumped in, turned on the battery and cranked the bird. "No Joy"...the negative to "Contact/Visual/Tally". Usually used with ATC traffic conflict calls. "In Hot"...this was usually used for diving fire, and meant you were switches hot and rolling in on the target (followed soon after with a "Breaking Left/Right" call). "Back to the Barn"...RTB "Yankin' and Bankin'"...high speed, low level/contour flight. "Bring Scunion"...light up a target. (I may have aged myself with that one)

KA-50 can and will orbit target with sensors on it, it is called "funneling" ;-). Nice thing is that you can automate it with autopilot and proper trimming for as wide you want or close you want. And you just don't have sensor on target, you have as well your cannon, rockets and missiles straight at the target area. You can fly at about 180-200 km/h while doing so IIRC. Once I while I was doing that at about 2km range I was required to jump out to the door. I came back maybe 10 minutes later and KA-50 was still performing almost perfect orbit around the target all by itself. The GPS track on KABRIS showed that deviation was very tiny as pattern it draw was large scale pendulum pattern. So truly a "hands-off" flying capability. At that point I have really trusted and spent time to learn how to utilize the AP multiple different ways.
@CasmoTV
@CasmoTV 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah with a bunch of set up and with it’s crazy rotor system I can see that. But a “traditional” orbit with a 35 deg slew is not in the cards. Interesting technique tho, I’ll have to try it out.

I remember my pilots used to refer to being strapped in vs having it strapped on. If you're strapped in, you're basically behind the aircraft, along for the ride. Having it strapped on is when it's an extension of your body, doing what you want it to do. I've known a few who had the aircraft consistently strapped on. These guys were just SH pilots.

@gerardheil8303 4 жыл бұрын
Never got around to asking you this but what do you think of the Ka-50 and it's sensors and abilities, as well as co-axial design compared to the Kiowa and Apache you flew? Obviously the workload is much higher, and the sensors and visibility are not nearly as good, but the basic idea of the Ka 50 and how it was designed was it was suppose to work in teams of 3 with 2 Ka-50s, and a Ka-29 doing the recon and relaying target info to the Ka-50s, who then would get pointed in the right dircetion to use their weapons. Obviously not as versitle as a 2 seat, shared work load but at least we get an attack helicopter we can pilot with just one person in a sim :) A lot of people critisize the co-axial design and the apparent danger of having the 2 rotars intersect and smash together during certain flight envelopes, but are conventional designs like the Apache and Kiowa immune from tail boom strikes?
@CasmoTV
@CasmoTV 4 жыл бұрын
I think if you don’t fly like a jerk you dont smash your rotor lol. I haven’t had that happen since I first flew it, and back then I was just stressing it to see what it could do. Modern birds have their own set of problems as well. The Kiowa operators manual stated in chapter 5 that “rapid full left pedal inputs above 90 knots could result in the tail rotor striking the tail boom”. As for the sensors I just wish it was night capable. It certainly works better with help.
@gerardheil8303
@gerardheil8303 4 жыл бұрын
@@CasmoTV Yeah from what I hear you can make it sorta night capable with the right contast and brightness dialed on the shkval and the cocklit lighting set just right but you can't track with the shkval and you have to be really close to make them out. Sorta partially night capable but nothing like you would have with a FLIR system. I read and have heard that the AH-64D when fully loaded also needed to do rolling takeoffs in high and hot enviroments like Afgahnistan, but then apparently a lot of helicopters struggle in those conditions espesially loaded up.

Casmo your videos are fantastic thank you for what u do. I am a British AAC Brat who spent alot of time around helicopters and pilots like your self and unfortunately failed medical due to very bad eye site so have never actually got to experience being a combat pilot. c'est la vie. I was wondering if you could help with some deeper information, I was lucky enough to be let into the old Apache sim with the 6 dimension legs with my father and other members of 664sqn AAC. When firing hellfire they would use "Missile Away" in cockpit. When they set up a scenario where we where firing for another Apache and ground units they would use "shot over" They said this keeps it in line with Artillery speak for groundies. Is the "Missile away" and the brevity term "Rifle" a difference in the way the Americans operate to the British? I find American brevity manuals that refer to "Rifle" as a general AGM so that makes sense but then the NATO brevity manual has this listed as a Maverick Missile Launch. Does America operating independently carry different brevity other then when its operating as part of a NATO Force? I cant ask the old man or the lads in 664 because they are British not American. You being a qualified American Apache pilot maybe you could shed some light on this. NP if not im just a massive nerd for Helicopters.
@CasmoTV

The short answer is that the Joint Fires publication states that an A/G missile launch is “rifle”. Saying “rifle away” (which some do) is redundant and I avoid it.

Hi. Not being a pilot or knowing much about the lighting of aircraft, I am wondering if you could explain something. In training, what are the different lighting configurations you use ? One person told me no lights or only one red means you are in stealth mode using night vision for the exercise. Is this true ? Do you ever fly with no lights is training ? My buddie said he saw a chopper just after dark with one red light hovering for over 15 minutes. Is that normal training ?

Lighting is regulated by the FAA unless in a military training environment but not there is no “stealth mode”. Under NVGs some lights can be turned off to avoid a hazard in flight due to the flashing.

True in flight ops in Iraq in Afghanistan at night we were on NVG the whole time so form lights were all set to IR, on the deck the collision and nav/taxi lights blink or steady, and bright or dim were all used for different readiness indicators during startup and taxi. Not sure if it's all branches but a standard in the USMC HMLA communities.
