Apalachicola Capital of the Forgotten Coast

Apalachicola is home to one of the most important inventions in human history. A young physician named John Gorrie invented and patented, in 1851, the first mechanical device that could produce ice and create air conditioning. Amazing! Next time you get in your car and turn on the AC or open the refrigerator, thank a young man who lived in Apalachicola named John Gorrie. There is a museum in his honor in Apalachicola.
