"The oldest preserved tombstone in the cemetery dates back to 1650, it is ornamented with the motif of a hand and marks the grave of a rabbi. By our count, it is the oldest tombstone here."

"Jewish tombstones such as these cannot be found anywhere else in the world and it is easily apparent that the first Jews who settled here encountered stecci, they discovered how local people used to mark the graves of their dead, because it is public knowledge that someone has been buried under each stecak, so they started shaping their tombstones similarly, making them to survive for hundreds and hundreds of years."

"I am always glad to visit this cemetery although only one of my ancestors, my grandmother, has been buried here. She simply could not stand the idea of dying and being buried anywhere else but in the old Jewish Cemetery in (the Sarajevo neighbourhood of) Kovacici which was the only reason why the surviving members of my family returned here after World War II, so that she could be buried here, to grant her that ultimate wish."

"I live here, comfortably, I work as a grounds keeper, maintaining and protecting this cemetery. Many foreigners who come to visit this cemetery from around the world are surprised when they hear that I am a Muslim, but I always tell them that normal people live here."
