The president of Burundi, the central African nation caught in escalating violence
between Hutus and Tutsis, has sought refuge in the U-S embassy in Bujumbura.
Sylvestre Ntibantunganya, a Hutu, went to the embassy shortly after a Tutsi-dominated political party rejected him.
And more anti-government, anti-Huti demonstrations have been taking place in the capital.
The dramatic news that the President had taken refuge in the U-S embassy capped several tense days since the weekend massacre of more than 300 Tutsis.
The Upruna party is one of the largest Tutsi parties. And it's the party of the Prime Minister.
Now it's pulled out of the government -- and rejected President Sylvestre Ntibantunganya, a Hutu, as President.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"On top of his defiance (President) Sylvestre Npibantunganya has been found responsible for many acts of high treason. The Upruna Party has done everything in its power to evaluate the government position together with the coalition. There has been an impasse on all levels because of the absence of the FROBEBU Party until now. It is as though we have stopped working already. In the opinion of the Upruna Party no reconciliatory gift has been offered because of this impasse for the nation and for the people of Burundi, we the central committee of the Upruna Party have decided on the 24th July 1996 that we will withdraw from the coalition with Sylvestre Npibantunganya."

A decision popular with the party faithful.
Out on the streets protests against the killings of Tutsis -- and against the government.
By the U-S embassy, to where the President's reportedly fled.
This man, a Tutsi said the people wanted a complete change.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"We want a change of all institutions in power, we really need a change. To prove what happened in the genocide, to prove that it is an act of FROBEBU. To see what the majority says, we must replace the government with another system."
SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop, member of Youth Patriotic Front - 100% Tutsi
So far, these demonstrations have remained fairly peaceful.
But with Tutsi-Huti violence having claimed 150,000 lives in the past three years -- no-one's sure for how much longer these marchers will stay silent.
