STORYLINE:
Thousands of people turned out in central Kyiv on Friday to bid farewell to one of Ukraine’s best-known fighters and commanders, Dmytro Kotsiubailo, who was killed a few days earlier at the age of 27 near the embattled eastern city of Bakhmut.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was among the mourners at St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery in central Kyiv, along with Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin who was in the Ukrainian capital on an unannounced visit.
Top Ukrainian officials, including the Defence Minister and the heads of the intelligence service and the armed forces, were also in attendance.
Zelenskyy shared the news of Kotsiubailo's death on Telegram, calling him a “hero of Ukraine, volunteer, man-symbol, man-courage.”
Kotsiubailo joined a nationalist volunteer unit in 2014 as a teenager after what became known as the Maidan Revolution, or the Revolution of Dignity.
Many mourners arrived with flowers, and the crowd knelt as Kotsiubailo’s coffin was carried out of the church to Maidan Square.
After the service, Zelenskyy and Marin laid flowers at the Wall of Remembrance near St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral, honouring the memory of fallen soldiers with a minute of silence.
