(11 Dec 1978) RR7850A THE VIETNAM BOAT PEOPLE
Malaysia has been flooded in recent months with tens
of thousands of Vietnam refugees from across the
South China Sea - the Boat People. Temporary
camps have been set up, but they're now overflowing.
There have been incidents of boats being pushed out
to sea again by angry local people, causing the death
of hundreds of people. World attention was captured
when a freighter, the Hai Hong, arrived off Malaysia
with 2,500 refugees aboard. The authorities wanted to
send it out to sea again, but relented after several
western countries agreed to accept the Hai Hong
passengers. The general situation of Indo Chinese
refugees, numbering hundreds of thousands, is
expected to get worse, and steps are being taken to
co-ordinate international action.

In 1978 I was overwhelmed by what I was reading about the plight of the refugees and decided that I was beeing called to do something--I wasn't sure what. Thinking that sponsoring a family might be too much to take on alone I issued a call in my church and 12 came forward for a meeting to begin a task force. It resulted in some of the most treasured moments and relationships of my life(I'm 89 now). Our 1st family arrived at 11 pm on December 8th of 1978. The family is some of our most treasured friends and included a 6 yr old and a 4 1/2 yr old. The 4 1/2 yr one spoke no English when he came but was valedictorion of his high school graduating class of 454 members. I mention that to show that these refugees were 'achievers' who were willing to do the best with the opportunities offered them. We were inspired to help 4 more families who also are treasured friends. In closing--I claim that we are blessed to be a blessing and many times the blessings return in a greater measure. Thanks be to God.

Thank you for sharing this & telling the world of the Vietnamese people & our hopes for freedom during our War. In 1978, my family escaped Vietnam too on a vessel just like the ones you filmed. We reached Malaysian shores, but they dragged us out back to sea in a different direction to die as they didn’t want to accept us. We eventually landed in Indonesia 🇮🇩 & stayed in refugee camp for 6 months until Australia 🇦🇺 accepted my family in 1979. I am grateful for Australia & call it home. So many people died & suffered for their freedom. Without my mum’s money, courage & braveness, we probably all would have died at sea or never left Vietnam. Seeing the kids in here with beanies & singing “Old McDonald had a farm…” brought back so many childhood memories. Nuns supported us as we stayed in Midway hostel in Maribynong- Melbourne. It’s important to recognise that all this journey & quest for freedom not only cost lives, families separated but leaves us all slightly traumatized by the ordeal.

As a younger generation who was born in Vietnam after the end of the Civil War 19 years, when I watch these images, I nearly cry, it seems that there are some things being stuck inside my throat and made me cannot say any words. Living under a communist regime for years, they always told us about the goodness of their regime that could help the country develop after the war, and this is what I saw. Many of people fled Vietnam and risked their life on the small boat at sea to look for free lands. This is actually a humanitarian crisis that I have never heard of before. This happened to my country caused of the harshness under the control of the Communist regime. So sad about the disastrous period of over a decade as of the black date 30th April 1975.

Thank you for asking, brother. Life is a lot better now. Like people have said - freedom is not free. BTW the boat on this video is a lot bigger than the boat I was in back in 1985. I remembered I could touch the water. I always kept a wooden board about 2x1 foot with me in case the boat sank. We made it to Indonesia after 8 days at sea. I did not go to the restroom at all. I was severely dehydrated and hungry. If you asked me - would I do I again? My answer is yes - I would do it again. Anyways thank you and wish you all the best.
