The immensely wealthy Sultan of Brunei celebrated his 60th birthday Saturday with a lavish ceremony for 10,000 guests at his palace in Bandar Seri Begawan.
Foreign dignitaries and members of the Brunei royal family from across Asia gathered in the Palace to welcome the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah for an official celebration.
Hassanal, one of the world's last absolute monarchs, has ruled the oil-rich nation for nearly four decades and is supreme commander of the armed forces and head of the government.
His family members holds all key government positions.
The tiny, tropical country of 380,000 has been celebrating since early July and festivities - including traditional boat races, concerts, fireworks displays and buffets - will continue through August.
Hassanal's guests were expected to include Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Philippine leader Gloria Arroyo, Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
