1:20 102 metres squared is as big as a 3 bedroom, 2 bath semidetached house where I live(two storey). 100 metres squared apartment seems massive to me. I had thought that apartments would be smaller than houses, but well done to those that have this size apartment.

Yeah my house is 1700 square feet, that apartment is a living room smaller which is still a really big place.

It’s considered small to medium size in my European country but considering housing prices continue to go up and up, somewhere near the future they will be considered big 😂

Many things are similar in the US, like setting up electricity, but we don’t have to officially register a move in most cases. (Some noncitizens are required to). Instead we might file an online form with the postal service to get our mail forwarded. Also, US rentals come with a full kitchen. The stove & refrigerator are the landlord’s responsibility & they must repair and replace when necessary. Rental protections vary extensively, often city by city. I live in New York City where most people rent and the rising cost of rent is a major problem. A typical housewarming gift would be a bottle of wine, or alternatively some household item like a fancy scented candle or a house plant.

I think it's fantastic that a stove and refrigerator are the landlord's responsibility. That would make moving much easier in Germany.

My brother lived in East Germany in Smallkalden after the wall came down. His best friend moved to the next town. His friend lived at my brother's house on weekends. They watched movies and played video games all weekend. His friend rented some movies and forgot to return them. They sent him reminders at his home with no luck. Then they started sending the notices to my brothers address. The East German grapevine was still working....

I am so glad I opted to rent a company apartment (fully furnished with TV and equipped kitchen, no power or water bills to worry about) when we lived there. It wasn’t cheap but the alternative, as is seen in this excellent video was too scary to consider. Many fond memories of living there.

What a coincidence! I'm currently moving apartments. It's my 4th apartment in Germany after 5 (going 6) years of living here; three of those apartments were in my first year though. At this point, I'm not as annoyed about the usual bureaucracy around it. I am, however, caught in a bureaucratic crossfire of needing to renew my residence permit while needing to do the Anmeldung at the same time.

102 m² is the average living space of a two-person household in Germany in 2022, according to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany. This also includes, for example, couples in larger apartments or houses where the children have moved out.

Ah yes, the classic “I’ll buy you pizza if you help me move.” Participated in that numerous times myself! Since it was mentioned briefly, I’m now curious about the legal protections renters have in Germany.
@equinox78397 күн бұрын
As long as you are not running behind with your rent payments, it's quite hard for a landlord to terminate the rental contract. The most common legit reason is if a family member of the landlord wants to move in (Eigenbedarfskündigung). In that case they still have to give notice 3 months in advance.
