Laser printer pull a huge amount of current, that's why it has to be plugged to the "Surge only" outlet, which are not fed by a transformer, which can become overloaded by laser printers. The building wiring fault LED indicates that the ground wire is missing or there is a neutral/phase inversion in your wall outlet, it has nothing to do with batteries exploding. In neither case it is gonna make your UPS malfunction, it's related to the surge protection efficiency and shock hazard issues.

Another thing is the surge protection. All APC UPS outlets are actully surge protected as well, not the "Surge only" outlets. As I explained, the Surge Only outlets are not fed by the UPS transformer, which can be overloaded by laser printers. And is also not very good idea to plug a Surge Protector in the UPS outlets. APC recommends not doing that for some important reason.

This would be good for a computer if you live in an area like Florida or somewhere very stormy and you are running like a server or something very valuable.

I hooked two 12volt batteries in place of the smaller batteries and it gives me hours of use. It powers a light, stereo, cell charger, tv & computer, haven't run them down yet. works great.

Connected the UPS (May 2015) to the Win7 Core2 Duo with the APC USB-RJ50 RJ45 cord and down loaded from APC the PowerChute Personal Edition v3.0.2 of vintage 31 January 2012. Found the Icon in the Hidden Icons of the lower Task Bar for PowerChute ! Deleted the set up in the Start (two places). Soft Ware works great ! Eyes UP and lights down, tjl Sent by Win7Pro64 w/ADSL

RCVD this one from ebay in 2015 with out batteries. Bought two 8 AH batteries (name brand) from Battery Plus for just under $80.00 USD; maybe cheaper batteries on ebay. Have ninety minute ;backup run time with one desktop computer, LED flat screen monitor and speakes. Running only 45 to 72 watts... Last summer the utility trimmed the trees and now no more brief outages. Must connect the USB cable and software soon ! Eyes UP and lights down, tjl Sent by Win7Pro64 w/ADSL

I think you need power before you can use it. At least that is how my old apc ups bk300 is. If it does not have power on the cord and I turn it on it will beep at me but never output anything.
