I came across this video in a timely manner. I'd just got hold of a Smart-UPS 1000 with fried batteries. I noticed that the battery compartment had rails to take 2 different sizes of batteries and took your advice and fitted RBC7 equivalents from a supplier that was also doing a special deal on them. Thanks for the advice ! BTW, I also got a small UPS where the battery was nearly dead, came across the videos on reviving SLA batteries (mainly by carefully adding de-ionised water to the dry cells and the recharging with care - yes despite being 'sealed' they DO dry out) and by heck, it works. It's not like a new battery but probably is as good as 75-80% capacity.

WARNING: battery wiring confusion ahead. 1) Your UPS may use a 12V or a 24V battery(s) configuration. Check first then wire appropriately. 2) always wire a fuse and fuse holder between the battery POS and the UPS POS

I have the same battery number RBC7 for my APC Back-UPS RS 1500. That is two 12 VDC batteries wired in series for a total of 24 VDC. Another YT video read from he manuel that said to use clear packing tape to hold the two (2) batteries together and to keep the wires from moving or shorting out (magic blue smoke) ! And the fuse is a good safety idea that other YT videos show. Thank you for a great video. Safety First. Eyes UP and lights down, tjl Sent by Win7Pro64 w/ADSL

Another thing I noticed is that when I did 2 APC Smart UPC replacements...1 was a direct swap of these cells, and the other was an upgrade to these cells...My batteries we about 15.5Volts, but once I did the replace, the charge was at 1 bar/LED light and then slowly charged up over a few hours. Your's lit up all but one LEd showing a rather full charge. One thing I did do is purchase the 22ah instead of the standard 18ah. Not sure if that makes the difference.

Straight forward, but I don't understand the 60 amp fuse between the two batteries. In my case, I will be using external deep cycle batteries, connected to UPS using a trawling motor plug. Fuse or even a breaker is on the back of just about every APC UPS. I would recommend eliminating the part with the fuse. Even more so, if not, you can buy fuse holder with cable ready in automotive parts. Soldering fuses is not a good idea.
@AnthonyHigham64140010809 жыл бұрын
+Ricardo Romer Thanks for that. I wondered about the wisdom of having a hard wired fuse. Presumably it is only there to prevent a catastrophic meltdown in the event of a dead short to the batteries. I am also about to wire an external battery, a 65 amp 12 volt lead acid, and was wondering about the unit's ability to keep it trickle charged. It's a Smart UPS 750. Any thoughts?

@High_Caliber9 жыл бұрын
+MagnumForce51 a) didn't have a socket for a fuse that big (even had to order the fuses), and b) if the fuse goes I likely have bigger issues than simple replacement of a fuse. I figure if a fuse blows on something like this, pretty much the whole setup is toast.

I'm not too fimiliar with these yet, I'm looking to buy one. But, if the battery is 12V, could I just take more 12V batteries (like a deep cycle marine battery) and connect it in parallel? I know that parallel will increase amps not volts, but would there be a problem with the charger running so damn long to charge it back up or something?
@jgwimmer9 жыл бұрын
Dylan Madigan The charger in the UPS isn't made to charge a high current load, aka, multiple batteries wired in series/parallel. If they were fully charged before you put them in, they would be ok, but if you lost power and needed them and they discharged to about 50% of their value (below 12vdc), the charger would overhead and probably burn up once power was restored as it tried to charge high current back into the battery. One thing I would do is leave the batteries external to the UPS, and use a separate bulk charger like a 2/6/10 amp automotive charger to recharge the batteries disconnected from the UPS, then plug the batteries back into the UPS once they're recharged. Now you're ready for the next power outage.

I have an old APC UPS system. I am going to desulfate some old 100AH Marine batteries. Can I just swap the batteries and run the system for longer? Can I parallel 2 marine batteries and get 200AH?
@jgwimmer9 жыл бұрын
Troll Boss The charging circuit in the UPS would probably overheat and burn up trying to supply enough current to charge batteries that big. If the batteries were fully charged initially, the charger in the UPS would act as a float charger and keep them topped off but if you lost power and needed the UPS, the batteries discharging over a long period of time would create the same charging problem once power was restored. Additionally, the wiring isn't capable of handling much more than 25 amps, so as long as you didn't try to draw more than the UPS is capable of providing (about 680 Watts for an SU1000), you should be fine. Just remember you have to have 2 12v batteries in series since the UPS expects to see 24VDC.
@trollking61119 жыл бұрын
Jeff Wimmer I would think that the UPS has a trickle charger and would slowly charge the batteries. I killed the power and the system held, maintaining the load for a few seconds before I turned the power back on. I connected the batteries in parallel with #10 AWG wire, series would have overloaded the UPS. You can't just double the voltage and expect the system to handle the increased voltage. #10 wire is good for 30 amps. A 10 to 1 step up ratio would get me my 120 volts needed to run the equipment. The system was pulling way too much power, 7 bitcoin miners, It fried my power supplies, and I think it also fried my UPS. The bitcoin miners were made in China, they were pulling A LOT more power than advertised. DO NOT buy Bitmain ANTMiners, they will destroy your system.
@MagnumForce519 жыл бұрын
+Troll Boss Most consumer UPS devices do NOT use trickle charge circuits. This leads to battery overcharging and only really cheap crappy ones have such a charging circuit. (most use a float charging circuit which simply maintains a certain voltage and wont overcharge. Only more expensive units would use a more advanced charging technology like those that use lithium batteries for example as charging those is not the same as charging SLA batteries) Some UPS devices use 12v instead of 24v. (generally the smaller ones). Just make sure the battery you are replacing it with has the same voltage. I can't imagine a really large battery overloading the charging circuit. It would simply take forever to fully recharge it. :P

question about outro music, what is the name of that number you hear at the end of your film?
That's a tricky question, I found it REALLY depends on the brand. The discount amazon ones will run 50% less than real APC ones, but if you mean how long in actual time, it depends on what the load you are using. If you're charging a phone it will last weeks, if you are running a fan or a heater, only minutes.
