Part 1/2. One notable event during 2014 that took place to commemorate World War I, was the Apedale Valley Light Railways 'Tracks to the Trenches' event, held over the weekend of the 12th, 13th and 14th September 2014. This video was filmed on the 12th September 2014. This event celebrated the narrow gauge railways role in the trenches during World War I.
The Apedale Valley Light Railway is a 2ft gauge line built within Apedale Country Park near Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire. The line is operated as part of the Moseley Railway Trust.
Steam locomotives based on the line to be seen included; Kerr Stuart 0-6-0T Joffre Class, Works No. 3014 built in 1916 and Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0WT, Works No. 1238 built in 1916. Visiting the line; Baldwin 4-6-0T, No. 778 built in 1917 (visiting from the Leighton Buzzard Light Railway), Henschel 0-8-0T, No. 1091 built in 1918 (visiting from the North Gloucestershire Railway), Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0WT, No. GP 39 built in 1930 (visiting from the Statfold Barn Railway) and Kerr Stuart 0-4-0T 'Wren Class, Works No. 3114 built in 1918 (visiting from the Vale of Rheidol Railway).
As well as steam locomotives, a great variety of petrol driven Motor Rail Tractors were to be seen. Based on the line; 20hp Motor Rail Tractor, No. L.R. 2832 built in 1918, 20hp Motor Rail Tractor, No. 2573 built in 1923, 40hp Motor Rail Tractor, No. L.R. 3090 built in 1918 and 20hp Tractor, No. L.R. 2638. Visiting the line; 20hp Motor Rail Tractor, No. 264 built in 1916 (visiting from the Welsh Highland Railway), 20hp Motor Rail Tractor, No. L.R. 2478 built in 1918 (visiting courtesy of N. Williams), 10hp 'McEwan Pratt' Baguley Tractor, No. L.R. 297 built in 1916 (visiting from the Welsh Highland Railway), 40hp Motor Rail Tractor, No. L.R. 2156 built in 1917 (visiting from the Festiniog Railway), 40hp Motor Rail Tractor, No. L.R. 3102 built in 1918 (visiting from the Amberley Narrow Gauge Railway), 40hp Motor Rail Tractor, No. L.R. 2182 built in 1917 (visiting from the Greensand Railway Trust), Fairbanks Morse Speeder 'Busta' (visiting from the Festiniog Railway) and Buda Foundry 'Sheffield Pattern' Pump Car (visiting courtesy of The Velocipede Group).
Part 1 of this video includes lineside views of the various locomotives operating along the short stretch of line with demonstration freight trains, passenger workings and various shunting movements. Also includes shots of Silverdale Station (the main station on the line) and Aurora Works.
