Judith is the mother of singer Maynard James Keenan of the band A Perfect Circle, and the subject of his song "Judith". In 1976, Judith suffered a cerebral aneurysm, which left her in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Despite her disability, she remained faithful to Christianity. Keenan has said that he blames God for Judith's condition, and that he watched her continue to pray.

@@f3nder111 his point was that she was a good person and did nothing wrong to deserve being in a wheelchair and paralyzed for the rest of her life she continues to pray and Believe In Christ as her savior even though she's paralyzed for the rest of her life. " Its not like you killed someone. It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side" .You praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed " . music is therapy this is his way of letting go. I don't think he had hate towards his mother necessarily, though of course I don't know. I know when she died , he spread her ashes in his vineyard. I believe her injury happened when he was a teen or preteen. That must have been alot for a kid/ teen / young adult to go through . To me it doesnt sound hateful to his mother. I take it as he cant understand how she isnt angry towards someone she considers her savior. As an atheist, I get it.

@Rebeccakalivoda what's incredible is seeing the progression in his songs about it as well. This song dropped in 2000, The Patient came in 2001, and Wings part 1 and 2 in 2006 where we hear him having past the immediate grief and anger stage into his love and profound respect for her. Lines like "you're the only one who can hold your head up high, shake your fist at the gate saying I've come home now. Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father. Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended" and "you were my witness, my eyes, my evidence" are genuinely some of the best ever written. He's pretty open about how he has nothing but respect for his mother's strength to keep having faith at rock bottom, but is for that very same reason he could never have that faith himself. It's truly moving.

Nothing like as sad as what he went through but after I left home, my parents become hardcore fundamentalists. Our family had never been more then holiday Christians and virtual agnostics growing up so it really felt like my parents had been taken from me. They would hold 'prayer sessions' in the house where they would speak in tongues and perform 'deliverances' (lay exorcism) until 3am. This song helps me cope.

@@harryr2431 It's all in his book, but long story short, his mom had a brain aneurysm when James was a teenager, leaving her severely disabled, and he cared for her for many years. She died 27 years later, the Tool album 10,000 Days was dedicated to her, and this song is named for her. He also named the first wine he made "Judith". Edit: his book is called A Perfect Union of Extraordinary Things, it's available in hard copy and ebook, a very interesting read.

Loved this song since the day it came out but 13 years later I sadly came to understand exactly how Maynard was feeling when he wrote this. I cry now when I listen to this. Feb 3, 2013, my Mom was just living her life & in an instance she was struck with a catastrophic stroke that left her unable to walk, talk, but yet was fully cognizant of her condition. She was imprisoned inside herself for 7 1/2 years until she passed from COVID. The nursing home, a place she vehemently was against ever living in, wanted to treat her but she knew COVID was her ticket out and we agreed to let her go and told them not to treat her. She finally got out of her imprisonment on Oct 27, 2020. I do believe in God but I'm not gonna lie, I have a shitload of serious questions for God, should that be where I go.

Most ppl starved for love n connection but pass by hundreds n thousands of ppl daily nnignore them strange creatures we r.. bow I can't say why one person ends up in a chair paralyzed the other gets to walk ect I know belief has one thing to do with it but there I'm sure r many other factors. Other talk about lessons n karmic debt from other lives or this being type of school n we enter into contracts before coming here. I have not had things easy myself but I also was laralyslzed after a "fall" so to speak.. but I believed I would walk again n I did believed God could n would heal me same w the finger they wanted to chop off still functional n the nail did grow back Dr's don't know everything. I hope she's happy where she is.. time is short n things r about to change for everyone n there will be no doubt soon if there is or isn't a God. Because scripture is coming to life n ppl will see amazing things for better or worse I pray ur on the right side of things when time comes.. believe in God God believes in you. Sacrificed a great deal for u aswell. The supernatural is around u all of the time if u jave the eyes to see n ears to hear it.. seek God while God can still be found will come a time ull pray to jave those words in front of u n they won't be fojnd.. n knowing those words ll keep u safe.. seek them while they found dear. @gregbanks5136 I am so very sorry for the issues you are having to handle with your Mom. Dementia is so difficult to deal with because you really just never know almost minute by minute what will happen with your loved one, for you, your Mom. Will she have periods of lucidity, complete unawareness, happy, sad, confusion and will she understand any of what's going on? I watched one of my best friends lose her Mom last year to Dementia that her Mom fought for several years. I wish I had words of wisdom to help you but there aren't any and for that I'm truly sorry. Like I said in my original post, I do believe in God but he made me who I am and who I am is mad, confused & horribly guilt ridden. I pray the days you have remaining with your Mom are great days. I know that's a hard prayer request to fill, but I will pray you & your Mom gets some of those days. I want so badly for my husband to hear this song so he can try to understand what I struggle with on my Mom's sickness & passing. We're coming up on 4 years of her passing but really for me, I feel like it's been 11 1/2 years and that I lost my Mom twice. She was such a great woman, Mother, faithful wife (that my Dad did not deserve) Grammy & Great Grammy. Friend to all she met. She even allowed my sister's best friend, who had just started transitioning in the 80's (not a good time to be tans) her family kicked her out and abandoned her but yet they were devoted Christians, and my Mom just welcomed her as if she were her own child. I can't play this for my husband because he too is a very devoted Christian, and that expletive towards the beginning will silence his ears instantly and mostly likely cause stress in our marriage. He'll only hear the song, not actually listen to it but I wish he would. Also, if you haven't listened to Tool's 'Wings for Marie (part 1)' & '10,000 Days (Wings part 2)' played back to back, for me, it is as equally as powerful and moving as 'Judith' but in a whole other realm of feelings and dealing with what happened to Maynard's Mom and her death. Sorry, I know I'm rambling & if you read this, thanks for letting me vent, but what made me the maddest about my Mom's death was the fact we were kicked out of the nursing home almost 11 months before she died, so I never got to physically see her and we had to watch her die alone, through a window, as we stood outside like she was some sideshow circus freak. It was degrading, dehumanizing, and disrespectful and I'm still so f'ing mad about it.

@@AmyBerry-vt1fv Thank you. You're very sweet for your comment. I believe there is a language difference but I'm pretty sure I understood what you are saying. I do believe in God, but I've been "tested" far too many times throughout my life & frankly I'm over it. I know the saying goes, "God never gives you more than you can handle" but I really wish he'd stop having as much faith in me because I can't handle it anymore & I no longer have faith in myself. I know my Mom is rejoicing in heaven and singing all his gospel praises & songs. She loved to sing so much, especially the gospel songs by Elvis. My Mom honestly had a beautiful & angelic singing voice, so I know she's singing cause her heart was always full of songs. Good bless you on your life's adventures and I pray all good things will come your way.

As a musician with hundreds of hours onstage at shitty little bars, I can attest that a good transition from slide to without slide takes a little practice. 3) Paz tying up her hair. This song and '10 000 Days' are an evocative bookended peek into Keenan's relationship with his mother. He starts by excoriating her continuing faithful ways in the face of what he saw as divine betrayal. By the time of the latter song, his outlook changed considerably, even expressing a grudging respect for her toughness, tenacity and courage - qualities he noted were lacking in her fellow churchgoers.

great analysis. i think this is all unintentionally capped by pneuma. the real shame about maynard is that he still hungers for christ and god, despite his anger towards what was done to his mother. gnosticism was where he fled to, his mind too hot to abandon the truth entirely, he sought that which perverted it instead. lateralus and pneuma are his clearest voice regarding dogma, as above so below, sun becoming, you can hear faith bursting from within Maynard, his sense of what is right is too powerful for him to ever ignore. I suspect we'll one day hear his true testimony, now that that old hot brand of hatred has finally cooled.

Chorus: "Its not like you killed someone, its not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side" Christ died on the cross, and a soldier drove a spear into his body, and the lord started bleeding water, and the soldier got scared and ran off. The song also says "even though hes the one that did this to you". I like the song, but its from the perspective of someone that doesn't completely understands God, has no faith and just mad about how his family member died. My grandmother died similar. Devout christian, still died with a series of health problems at age 52. Still I dont question christ or blame God for what happened. That is not the will of the father. Life has its problems. 😢 I'm here because this is the song my son's father said reminded him of us. He passed away last week. Many many years ago when we first started hooking up it came on the radio while we were driving, he put his hand in my leg, it was the 1st time he'd done that. I knew then we were getting serious. It wasn't until a few months later that he told me this song made him think of me because I was like heaven beside him & he had hell with in. Rest is soul he did have hell within. The demon of addiction. He fought it so hard but after his mother was murdered that's when there was a giant empty hole, there for the taking. It was drugs for a long time, then we had our son & he checked into rehab for an entire year! He did great for over 8 years & then messed up again. That time got him locked up for a few years. After 20 years together the relationship deteriorated. But we have always been best friends & stayed that way. We lived 2 hours apart so we didn't get to hang out like we would have. He even had a new girlfriend & he was doing great. But then one day he decided he could have a drink every now & then. Nope. Full on alcoholic in no time. On top of that he was diagnosed with some heart, gallbladder & liver problems. He got locked out of his apartment last week in below freezing weather, the neighbor called 911, because she saw him out there for a long time, he went from ER to ICU & then died before me & his son could get there 😢 Everyone please take care of yourselves. Everything in moderation. Life may suck sometimes but ride it out. You never know how many people you really have in your corner. Life is always peaks & valleys & God takes care of us in both places. ❤

Crazy.. My dad almost died in Jan. during that cold weather from hypothermia. he's the one who turned me to God, and became a bad image as I was growing up. I've returned to God once more, but man, I remember that moment of the freeze.. Almost lost my old man.

I love how the video is presented as a jam or a studio session, not on stage at a concert, not a big production video with tons of imagery, just the band. I think it's an intimate presentation to honor Judith. Well done and masterful...on another level.

The music video was directed by David fucking Fincher that's why. Keep in mind, he did shampoo commercials and music videos before his first movies, And didn't really do that afterwards. (why would you?) Consider that and then consider that this music video came out 5 years after he did Seven. Legend.

I have been listening to this song a lot recently. I lost my mum to pneumonia just before Christmas, it was sudden, yet there had been signs that something was amiss for quite some time. The lyrics reflect the pain, despair and pure rage I have been feeling over the last couple of months. I miss you mum ❤️

I've only recently been introduced to A Perfect Circle, thanks to Rick Beato. I'm looking forward to the journey of discovering the rest of their music, plus Tool and Pucifer. In 45 years of listening to contemporary music, this is without doubt one of the best, most powerful songs that I've heard. Outstanding. And what about that video? It's the epitome of a rock video - absolutely masterful editing. One of the best I've ever seen!

I watched the Conan O'Brien TV performance of this song and was knocked out. Someone commented they half expected Paz to tie her hair up like the official video. So here I am and yeah, that move is pure attitude. This song is so powerful. The performance is exquisitely complex yet still thrashing. Maynard's vocals are so raw and passionate. The lyrics are disarmingly direct. This has got to be considered one the best prog-metal tracks ever.

God's there. Make no mistake about it. Rest your mother soul, and I hope that you find the comfort and strength that you need to cope with the loss from whatever resource that you need to find it from. Keep your head up brother.
