I love survivorship bias. I remember the first time I learned about it, I was a 6 year old at an amusement park. We were waiting in line for a ride for a couple of hours and then as we were near the front, we were the next up and the attendant shut the gate. We were the front of the line, and it struck me how unbelievably unlikely that event was. I had never been the exact front of a multiple-hundred person line. I kept thinking how new and interesting it was that out of everything that could happen, out of everything that could have happened to change it, we were the people that ended up as the exact cutoff point for who could be allowed on. Then, it struck me that every line had somebody in a front, and that regardless of how unlikely it is for one individual to be at the front of a long line, someone always is. The odds of YOU being ________ may be extraordinarily low, but in many cases, someone WILL ALWAYS be at that state. The lotto for example, sure your chances are unbelievably minuscule, but SOMEONE will always eventually win the lottery. I don't know why, but just that realization struck me and made me appreciate how complex everything is.
