This would in turn make N'1 infinitely bigger, making the gap between N'0 and N'1 infinitely bigger (repeating the process). That's exactly what I was thinking because there isn't an infinitesimal number that can not be divided in half, and is seen as not physically significant. It's the plank length, that's not it though. There is also an amount of time that if any smaller wouldn't be considered physically significant, the plank time. which is how long it takes light to travel a plank length. you will surpass the tortoise at a time. In the video,you aren't just dividing length but time too.While looking at smaller length,you are also dividing the time. In effect,you are slowing down time more and more as the man approach the tortoise. Initially you are looking at 50 m in 5 s then 10 m in 1 s.then 5 m in 0.5 s.then 2.5 m in 0.25 s and so on. so the distance they meet becomes 50+10+5+2.5... and the time is 5+1+0.5+0.25.... so you are looking at what value the distance approaches in the limit where the time approaches the time of collision. This is just the basis of calculus. saying the man will never be ahead of the tortoise is wrong

You clearly did not watch the full video if you dont remember him talking about our ability to complete an infinite number of tasks in a finite amount of time
@ThisIsWEB6 жыл бұрын
@@ethansadberry6069 i keep typing big replies on here and accidentally clearing out my text :'/ not trying to argue really, i just wanna makes sense of stuff too doing infinite tasks in a finite amount of time is not actually possible because the endpoint given in the video is one we will NEVER reach. Asking for the state of the lightbulb at the end of the hour is meaningless because you will never get to the end of the hour. In reality, yes the hours passes. But in reality, time moves forward (linearly). In the experiment, we observe time that slows down (moving forward, but fractionally). In reality, the man passes the tortoise. We can calculate when this happens. In the experiment, he will never reach it because as he races, time is slowing down indefinitely. Since we cannot break down time into a definable unit, we can *theoretically* complete tasks on and on forever. But the task of catching up simply does not happen unless we allow time to not lose speed. The question of the lightbulb being on or off at the end is invalid because if you could actually switch it in half the time as the tasks, you would also never reach the end of the hour. I explained it way better before but I've written this out like three times lol.

If you're talking limits then you're wrong here as limit of something is the value it approaches, not necessarily the value it will be...

I use to have the same discussion with my academically talented 8th grade math students. Does a plane actually land if it only descends half it's distance to the ground? Do your feet actually the floor when you get out of bed? If I let you go to the restrooms', will you ever get there in time? Proved to be a very interesting discussion on infinity and the word infinite.

As for Thomson’s lamp, I feel like quantum physics could explain the end state. Quantum superposition of the lamps state causes one state to be chosen because of the lamp being observed.

12:00 But in the second example, let's say you end up with infinity, because you infinitely add a net of nine, you still remove 1 ball every step, and 1 ball removed * infinity = infinity balls removed, therefore the amount removed equals the amount inside, and a fundamental law of mathematics is x - x = 0, therefore the amount of balls, is zero.

Thats the shortest messurable interval You can do math with half a plancktime and "things" can happen in less then a plancktime For example the there is a very short interval where the bond between 2 Hydrogenatoms is mor on side then the other this causes an inversion for the elktrons and they emmit a very short pulse of a long elctromagnetic wave near radio wavelength the time it takes is insanly short but its on the gold disk for voyager 1/2
