FRQ answer: In the Nitrogen cycle, unusable N2 found in the atmosphere is converted into Ammonium (NH3) through a process called nitrogen fixation, done by nitrogen-fixing bacteria, or in some cases lightning. In its Ammonium form, nitrogen can be used by plants, and so the transformation from N2 to NH3 is important because without it the nitrogen would be useless to plants.

A) The act of ammonification, soil bacteria decomposing waste into NH3 to be used as soil nutrients,. B ) The soil bacteria's ammonification process facilitates plant and consequently animal life to thrive and function as an ecosystem. As seen in tundra biomes, soil plays a crucial role in the life of an ecosystem, as permafrosted ground discourages bacterial growth needed for a nutrient rich soil to allow other complex organisms to live.

FRQ 1.5 Would this be a good answer for the FRQ at the end? Nitrification, the process where soil bacteria convert ammonium (NH4) into nitrite (NO2) and then nitrate (NO3), is important to the transformation of an ecosystem because plant roots take in the nitrates from the soil and when animals eat the plants (or carnivores eat herbivores) they get the nitrogen too. Without nitrogen, the organisms would not be able to make the DNA that is in their cells and the amino acids used to proteins so they would die and the ecosystem would fall apart.

Given that AP doesn't repeat FRQs, will it be useful to examine past year FRQs or just having a look at them is enough?

Practice answering them still, FRQs require application and if you are not good at that the FRQs on the test may be tricky. If not just read and understand what format of questions you will be seeing on the test.

1.5 nitrogen cycle Overview Movement of nitro molecules between sources and sinks/reserves Sources release N, sinks take nitro Nitro reservoirs hold nitro for short time compared to carbon reservoirs Atmosphere is main nitro reservoir Nitro in atmosphere is gas and not usable by plants or animals Nitro is critical plant and animal nutrient All living things need nitro for dna and amino acids for proteins Nitrogen fixation Process of n2 being converted to ammonia or nitrate for plant use Bacterial fixation is when bacteria converts n2 to ammonia Rhizobacteria live in legumes and convert n2 for them in return for amino acids from plant Synthetic fixation is when humans combust fossil fuels to turn n2 to nitrate Nitrates are added to fertilizers Other nitro cycle steps assimilation is plants and animals take in nitro and incorporate into body Plants take nitro from dirt and animals take nitro from plants/other animals Ammonification when dirt organisms convert biological material to ammonia and return it to dirt Nitrification is turning nh4 into nitrite and then nitrate by soil bacteria Denitrification is turning no3 into nitrous oxide to return to atmosphere Human impacts on nitro cycle Nitrous oxide is greenhouse gas that affects climate Ammonia volatilization is excess fertilizer use that leads to nh3 gas entering the atmosphere Causes acid rain and respiratory inflammation Less nitro stays in soil Leaching and eutrophication is when synthetic fertilizers are carried out by rain/water

Nitrogen fixation It changes nitrogen to ammonia allows nitrogen to be biologically available, mostly through the action of certain soil bacteria.
