I think Jarang is choosing the leg at certain times because it is easier for him to wrap his arms and legs around and feel more secure due to his coordination problems and weakness. His strength is not developed at this point and may remain out of balance so he will need to adapt his own methods.
@JennyMiller-rt4ue22 күн бұрын
I don’t think he knows another way at this point.

@@JennyMiller-rt4ueprobably true. He can cling to his mom's torso while she is seated or lying down, but when she moves he's safer on her leg.

That's the exact thought I had! Plus, she grips his leg with her foot, so he's much safer than if he had to cling to her body. She adapted from day 1 - it's the judgmental humans who were/are criticizing her who were/are the idiots!

Jinga still carries him on her leg.
@JennyMiller-rt4ue22 күн бұрын
the zoo says that she carries him on her leg because of his hernias and weak limbs. Summer cradled Rufus in the crook of her arm way past when Jingga was already legging it. She could have cradled Jarang for much longer … but she didn’t. For some reason, she is not comfortable with a baby on her body. I wish she could tell us. To her, i think the foot thing is safer for Jarang… Next baby, we find out :)
@MegUSN5221 күн бұрын
While it's not the norm, other Primate mothers, including Orangutans, prefer to carry their young by their feet. Mothering is just as varied between Primates as it is for humans. What works for most doesn't always work for all. There is nothing wrong with Jingga carrying Jarang with her feet, especially since he can't grasp with his hands because of his muscular coordination disability. I'm sure Jarang has had to adjust her mothering style even if we humans disagree with her methods. This is a fantastic video from Ape Tracker.

It's so terrible the way Jingga removes Jarang the minute he wants to drink some milk from her. I hope he's getting enough nutrition but it definitely doesn't look like it. He needs supplemental bottle feedings cuz he is just too small and he is obviously not eating enough. Jingga is not a loving mother at all. She never holds him close to her or wants to feed him. It makes me so sad for Jarang.

Tbey looks so underweight, unlike the jungle school orangutans in Borneo. A zoo is no place for animals with no trees or wildlife. They are being watched by all in the window and don't think they don't know they are some act of amusement. They eat hay off the ground and in dirt and who knows what is in it. They are surrounded by cement walls with barely any climbing apparatuses. They don't look happy or have any expressions of a smile. THIS IS MY OPINION, AND LET'S FACE IT. I AM RIGHT AND A ZOO IS THE PLACE FOR THESE INTELLIGENT LOVING ANIMALS
@ApeTracker14 күн бұрын
@@jincaviglia this video only shows a small area of their huge habitat, one of the largest facilities in Europe designed specifically by primate experts for these critically endangered animals. They have off show areas and lots of climbing equipment not shown in this video including a large well planted outdoor habitat. All areas are available for them to use, however it is their choice and preference to be in the indoor area most of the time as it is temperature regulated for them. It is not ideal that these animals are in zoos but due to habitat loss, poaching and the illegal wildlife trade the numbers are critically low in the wild. Zoos are essential to prevent extinction of this remarkable species. Hopefully one day soon they will be safe and able to thrive in the wild

They do have an outdoor enclosure. There are more orangutans in Blackpool Zoo's care. Jingga and Jarang have been separated from the rest of the troop because of Jarang's medical issues. When Summer had Rufus, they allowed them in with Jingga and Jarang. They have started allowing the father near as well. They are keeping them separate to protect Jarang from the rest of the troop. Orangutans in nature are solitary anyway.
