I feel like they really missed an opportunity to make the car extremely unique. The ammo type should change the dmg output, recoil, and shooting speed. Like heavy is slower but more precise and hits harder. (Good longer range but horrific close range) Light is faster, harder to control, and doesn’t hit as hard. ( good close but horrific long) They can balance this by making the gun go threw a 3 or 4 second animation before it switched ammo type. That way you can’t switch it on the fly to what you need at that exact moment.

Honestly you don't need a 3 to 4 second animation, just make it reload when you switch. Its easier to do and doesn't require new animations, the rest is just changing numbers. Its balanced by you having to carry 2 ammo types for 1 gun to make it function the way it was meant to, and by the reload time not to mention that you would need to carry 2 types of magazines if you wanted to have both heavy and light ammo maximums on it. Personally i agree its a big missed opportunity to make a unique smg.

I feel like another big difference is in the damage per MAG. They both have the exact same mag size at every level, but since the CAR does 13d/bullet it has 351 damage in a purple+ mag; vs the R-99 only does 11d/bullet which means 297 damage in a purple+ mag. This makes the CAR much easier to one-mag people with, since the extra damage gives you ~4 extra bullets of wiggle room to miss.

I just tested them and another bonus for the car over the r9 is that that hipfire recoil pattern on the car barely climbs then stays some what steady. Whereas the r9 pattern climbs a lot then sorta zags around. Seems like the car had better hipfire too

the whole shpeal at the very beginning i feel is pretty misleading since each smg's individual dps is so close it's almost negligible unless literally every bullet is hit, which is very very unlikely to happen in any context other than point blank. This happens less and less as apex legends meta progresses, so i think the discussion should shift more towards an argument of practicality with raw numbers as a supportive argument rather than the other way around.

Apart from Wingman who uses pistols? SMG, assault rifles and shotguns are all more versatile in a game like this. The majority of weapons are going to be short to mid range auto/semi auto weapons. There are already 3 different grenades, what would you do for a fourth? Personally I like the idea of buffing an already existing gun for the care package weapons. This just means you've more than likely ha practice with the weapons before they went in the care package

Honestly, I think respawn should take the skill cannon approach a little more seriously. I know some of it is that keeping guns easy to use is more fun for casual players - but upper level ranked (diamond and up) gets really stale from a weapon meta perspective. People just use the most consistent weapons. If I could count the S10 Lstar/charge rifle density, it would be insane.

It's an SMG so you'll have SMG optics iron sights to 2x and that's as high as it goes. There's no difference in the ammo as far as performance, it's just so you can use two different types of ammo

I find it super interesting that the Car is designed for pilots lorewise but gameplay wise pretty much made for Ash. Somebody who moves from deathbox to deathbox, seeing points of interest as nothing more than a hindrance on what should be a clean cut, straight path much like a phase tear... Kinda sounds to me like somebody who would need ammo constantly, and find themselves in a tricky spot without it. (Particularly since I rarely see people with a heavy AND light weapon, usually one or the other)

My play is flatline1st choice, and whatever has a clip around or volt natural, never r99/prow. I find the 301 and it replaces any smg then I work on sniper stuff. Never shotguns anymore, never dev/havoc until I get a mag/turbo. Alternator replaces 301 and spitfire can take sniper spot if found and kraber is key

I'd just like to say that the r99 and prowler while still both very good in certain scenarios are very rarely run in any sort of high tier play. The main reason is that the r99 requires extremely high accuracy and isn't flexible long range and requires atleast a blue mag to be usable. The prowler is pretty good as a discount shotgun but lacks flexibility of other auto guns and doesn't really have a super consistent spot because of the Eva running circles around it close range. also both are bad for bubble fights as well.

Strange to see that the CAR ingame is slower than the CAR in the gameplay they showed us. In the trailer, the CAR was actually faster than the R99 and I calculated it.

I'm happy that this smg can't be used at medium range as well because I see smgs as close range wepons and this works perfect for that too bad i have ptsd for tf2
