I'm working on getting this to work on my 2010 fj only having it mount down with the badlands universal winch mount.

Hey. It was hard to tell...So your 02+ bumper doesn't have the opening for the control box? I've got the pre 02 style and it has a nice opening there , and the winch mounts feet down , but it looks like it may be a tight fit either way for the control box . Looking at your video it seems like yours was more solid looking without the winch hatch so that's why you relocated , is that right ?
@brandonryder363210 ай бұрын
My bumper only could mount feet forward. And the control box wouldn't fit on top of the winch because it would be facing backwards and hit the crossmember. My bumper doesn't have an opening for the control box on top because it isn't designed to mount feet down. You may still have to relocate your control box if the opening on your bumper isn't huge. Because the control box on this winch is huge

What is the difference you observed (in your research) between steel wire and this synthetic fiber? Weight is one thing, what about the reliability say after 3-4 years down the road after installation?
@brandonryder36323 жыл бұрын
Synthetic requires keeping it clean from dirt in the fibers which can degrade it over time. It also can be damaged by direct sunlight so a cover is required for the winch, or a hidden install like this one. But it's safer than using steel. Steel can also degrade from rust. But it's typically a longer line due so smaller diameter. It's a trade off, but i like the safety of the rope vs cable. And i carry extension straps anyway.

Great video on the install. It's good to see a visual of how it all goes together and the problem areas. Now that you have had it for a while. How do you like the winch? Have you had a chance to use it?
@brandonryder36322 жыл бұрын
I've used it a few times. Works just fine so far. No issues. It's probably a good choice for someone like me who only uses it a few times a year. I have no idea how it would hold up to daily use or really hard pulls, but if i needed a winch for that, I'd probably buy a Warn.

@@brandonryder3632 That's great to hear. The same Apex 12000 is on an 80 series that I purchased and am currently restoring, along with the synthetic rope. I love to see that other's are using it as well in the community with good results.

I’m going to have to roll the winch over to have the feet facing the forward mount for my application as well. I didn’t see anything in the literature or in your video that said that this will be detrimental. I was thinking of internal oil levels that may not work correctly when clocked differently. After using it a while any regrets for the configureation?
@brandonryder36323 жыл бұрын
I've used it a few times since the video. There is no oil inside. Only grease. So no problem with orienting it this way. In practice, in my application i reach down in front of the radiator to access the clutch. I never reach from underneath. I think it's a great value, and i hear the 20% coupon is back this week, so if you hurry you can get one for under $500 as i did a year ago. Great winch

Thanks for posting this up Brandon. How did your addition of a punch out in the skid plate work out for accessing the clutch control? Which rear bumper do you have on your cruiser?
@brandonryder36324 жыл бұрын
The knockout plate works great. I cut a hole with a jigsaw for a 4" knockout plate(50 cents) and painted it black. The rear bumper is a dissent offroad modular bumper.
@kellstat4 жыл бұрын
What rear bumber are you running? Could you not have just left winch right side up & cut bit out of top of bumper if needed?
@brandonryder36324 жыл бұрын
My rear bumper is made by dissent. He doesn't make that exact bumper any more but has a newer design. As for the winch, this 03+ style ARB only mounts the winch with feet forward. It's not possible to mount it with the feet down. Other bumper designs may be different. But i liked the 03+ ARB bumper style.

Clock your winch motor and your position for reaching clutch shouldn't be a problem. Beats laying on the ground.
@brandonryder36323 жыл бұрын
If you watch the whole video, the new HF winch can't be clocked. The motor housing only goes on one way. Kinda sucks but it's still workable
@harleymichael2813 жыл бұрын
@@brandonryder3632 Gotcha. Bummer! Hey for the cost of the winch still worth a little inconvenience and a super value if turns out to be reliable. Have you thought about making some sort grab handle out of wood or another material so you can just turn clutch handle from the top of the engine bay?
@brandonryder36323 жыл бұрын
@@harleymichael281 i am tall enough to reach it from the top already. I just liked the idea of the hole in the bottom for easy access. But if you were stuck in mud or otherwise couldn't get to the bottom, from the top is the way to go. A real slick solution would be to accuate it with a servo. But I'm not that cool. Lol

It has some sort of water proof rating. I wouldn't hesitate to use it after a deep water crossing. But i avoid those anyway due the the immediate need to check all fluids afterwards.

I initially bought the APEX 12000 lb winch to install in my ARB bumper that is on my Tacoma. After seeing that the APEX winch wasn't able to be clocked I opted for the WARN M8000 winch. It looks like ARB builds all their Bumpers with WARN winches in mind if you watch WARN's video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2GvZYOAhqenpbM It was super easy to Clock and install but it costs more $$$. Thanks for making your video though... it helped me see the difficulties I would be facing if I stayed with the APEX Winch.

You drunk bro? I think informing people that the winch can't be clocked like , i don't know, every other winch on the planet, is kind of an important detail for those with forward mounting bumpers to consider. And in case you didn't watch the whole video, i did make it work and i use it. Troll

@@brandonryder3632 the entire video is you whining like a little beta. get over it, they arent going to design a winch specifically for you, you arent special and you dont matter.
