A lot of music-making just having good instincts and unless you're a synth-god like Aphex, you usually need to learn a fuckload of music theory first. But really most theory comes down to "trust your ears" and then iterating a lot over ideas. Dude's been making music for like >40 years so he's had a lot of time to figure out what sounds good.

i love this but i mean, already from the 2nd track i can say this is not for "sleeping". maybe for someone it is, idk, that is obviously subjective. my finest examples of "sleep music" deliberately crafted in this way and working as advertised would be Robert Rich's Somnium albums, as well as naked flames' sleep mixtapes/mixes (even though even there, not all of them, i'd say).
